I’m a beginner, but want to learn NT Greek up to a reasonably professional level. My local bookstore has “Learn New Testament Greek” by John Dobson. Is that good?

I learned Greek through J. Gresham Machen's textbook and am currently teaching a class with that text but I like William Mounce's textbook even better. Mounce gives more explanations and his method teaches the rules better which results in less rote memorization and better appreciation for the consistency of the language. Check out www.teknia.com for info and resources from Mounce. I have had no exposure to Dobson.
Persevere in learning Greek and you will see the glory of Christ in greater brilliance than ever!

I am not familiar with that book, and it has been too many years since I looked at a beginner Greek book to recall a specific title, but can give some guidelines....

You want one that is a workbook. It should have fill in the blank and similar exercises to make you actually use the language.

You should also invest in an interlinear Greek New Testament. This will have the Greek text with word for word English below it. As you go through the book, practice with the Greek NT, seeing how many words you can recoginze and getting familiar with the syntax (how words are arranged).

It takes a little work, because you not only have to learn a new language but an alphabet to go with it. But it can be done. And I have found it worth the effort in the end.

I have respect for John Dobson, but when he started mixing his political views in with his council, I decided he's getting to spread out. If he has a book out about Greek languages, he is getting spread thin.
