to increase metabolism, you need to grow muscle mass. The more muscle tissue u have, the faster u burn calories. And yes, the higher your metabolism rate the more calories you need in a day and thus you tend not to gain as much weight assuming you are eating the same about of food and doing the same daily activities.

Regular cardio exercise helps. Go for a jog first thing in the morning on empty stomach(!) because your body will reach for fat as fuel as there's no food in your stomach yet. Go for another jog in the evening (but make sure you have an early tea no later than 6pm) at about 8 or 9 o'clock and don't eat anything after that! Drink lots of green tea and coffe during the day. You can also buy some herbal supplements that help with fat burning (from health food shops). Have regular smaller meals every day and make sure you eat at least 1500 calories per day. Try to keep yourself busy during the day and make sure that when you rest you have an 'active rest'. Talk to people more and keep your mind active too. Believe it or not revving up your metabolism is a mental thing as well. Make sure you sleep enough too!

Its true.
But changing your metabolism is not something I would know about.
My metabolism is obscenely high, and I'm underweight as a result. I am practically incapable of putting on weight at all. I've joked on occasion that I could eat a camel and survive (something typically deemed to be impossible), provided it wasn't in the desert, on the basis that I'd have burnt up most of it as pure heat energy before I got to the end of it.
Its not all fun and games though.
I tend to be freezing cold when I get up in the morning due to not having eaten for several hours. If I don't eat very regularly, my body temperature starts to drop and I lose energy rapidly. I've got no reserves to fall back on.
So yeah... its true.
Not sure about speeding your metabolism up though.... unless you want to try drinking a lot of caffienated drinks.

Apparently if you eat 5 small meals a day instead of 3 large ones, this speeds up your metabolism. Sounds crazy but it's true :)

'Metabolism' is a technical term for 'things going on in the body'. It can be chemical, electrical, physical or mechanical, and the 'marker' for it is heat.
Eating food increases your metabolism, because lots of reactions kick in to digest & distribute the nutrients.
Your liver is the site of a lot of metabolism, because lots of the large-scale chemical conversions happen there. Unfortunately, most of these conversions (eg detoxifying lots of alcohol, which can lead to a fatty liver) produce dangerous wastes or side effects. (When you're cold, or your blood-sugar is dangerously low, your liver will start up some unnecesary reactions to produce heat, or sugars. The survival value outweighs the risk from accumulating wastes)
The most noticeable metabolic boost is shivering. When you're cold, your muscle system will generate unnecessary movements, to produce heat. This heat is exactly the same as the heat that muscles produce when you're using them for exercise or activity.
Because your muscular system is the most available, and the largest, site of metabolic reactions in your body, the simple answer is:
Get up and do something that involves movement.
Preferably, you should try to use as many of your muscles simultaneously, but gently. Try swimming, but don't knock yourself out.
(Movements gentle enough to do continuously, burn fat. Movements requiring effort, and which will produce fatigue, burn sugar, and make you hungry. Most activities require a combination of these types of movement.)
It's NOT true that a 'faster metabolism' (higher 'base metabolic rate' or BMR) will protect you from getting fat. Fat storage is a metabolic process, so it INCREASES as your metabolism speeds up. However, activities that increase your metabolic rate use up energy, (from fatty acids in your bloodstream, as well as sugars)so there is likely to be less fat left over to be stored.
INACTIVE metabolic boosters (eg giving your liver alcohol to detoxify) can make you, or your liver, fatter.

By eating 4 meals at the same time every day and by drinking 1.5l of water a day, the meals must be small and consist of a bit of fruit this will then ensure that your metabolism is working well, people make the mistake of trying to loose weight and not eating this DOES NOT HELP, you gotta eat 4 times a day and a small bit of walking

It's simple. If you burn off more calories than you consume, you lose weight. I have a gadget that measures how many calories are used and Tanita Innerscan bathroom scales which measure weight, body fat %, body water %, visceral fat level, basal metabolic rate, muscle mass, metabolic age, bone mass and calories required to maintain current weight.

I have heard, on This Morning of all places, that if you drink black coffee before you exercise this helps?! Could be a load of rubbish. I know that if you gain more muscle, the muscle works burning off calories even when you are still. Also, eating brekkie, never starve yourself, this reduces metabolism!

Get a major burn!! that speed it right up. if not thinking that drastic exercise, or create a machine that makes you younger. Think eating 3 meals a day helps cause if you skip breakfast your metabolism slows
