The reason that there are so many antidepressants is that each one attempts to correct a different combination of chemical imbalances which cause the depression. Some are serrotonin re-uptake inhibitors, some are norepinephrin inhibitors, some are dopamine inhibitors, some are combinations of two. The one that works best for you will be the one that replaces the neurotransmitters that are lost or malfunctioning. Finding the best or most potent is often a frustrating period of trial and error.
Find a sympathetic doctor and stick with it. Those who tell you "its all in your head" are right . Its like telling a diabetic "its all in your pancreas". If you were a diabetic, you'd take insulin to replace what should be there naturally. If you're depressed, you should find the meds that replace what is lacking. Its a medical condition that deserves to be treated and can be corrected.

Without question the most effective antidepressant is to accept that you are feeling depressed and go on with your life. The depression will list very quickly. Go out for a walk; look at something beautiful; cuddle your cat; cuddle your girlfriend; do something nice for someone.

Chemical will not help - only give a temporary fix and avoid the real issues.
