I'm looking for a small hatchback car - about Golf size although I definately don't want a Golf. New, automatic, engine size 1.6 or under ( so my daughters can drive it), room for shopping, dog and 3/4 people at a pinch for shortish journeys. A bit different perhaps. Any suggestions? I'm based in Europe.

Nobody has mentioned the Renault Megane yet. Not essentially a small hatchback (thought to be fair neither is the Golf). I've had a few as hire cars, one of which was a 1.6 Auto and wasn't bad. I've also had a Honda Civic 1.6 Auto as a courtesy car and it was a dream! It was the last model though, not the new one - not that there is any reason to think the new Auto will be worse! Best advice is to test drive as many as you can.

I agree with driving automatic cars, why change gear yourself when a plastic brain under the bonnet can do it for you!
However, if your daughters are learning to drive, I would advise they learn and practice in a manual car so they are able to drive both types, otherwise they may be very limited on choice when they come to buy their own cars later, due to the fact that for some reason nobody in the UK likes Autos!

Opel Astra or Ford Focus are the obvious choices.
You could consider a Mercedes A-class, or BMW 1 Series - depends how much money you want to spend.

Toyota Yaris or Honda Fit are nice
or if you like American cars the Dodge Caliber, or the Chevy Aveo is small and cute.

I drove a hired a car recently. It was a toyota corolla accent.
It got 600kms on one tank of petrol...
And you could barely tell when the gears were changing it was that smooth...
If I was buying another small car... I would look at it.
