The precursor of Lexapro, called Celexa or generic Citalapram, worked best for me, and is certainly the least expensive now.
But it does depend on your bodily chemistry and dosage as to which will work for you.

The answer is neither, they are both different.

They are two different antidpressants that effect the reuptake of different neurotransmitters in your brain.

Effexor is a multiple reuptake inhibitor which affects the reuptake of dopamine and neuropinephrine. Other MRI's are Wellbutrin and Cymbalta.

Lexapro is a serotonin reuptake inhibitor which affects the reputake of serotonin. Other SSRI's are Zoloft and Paxil.

In cases of Bipolar Depression and Borderline Personality Disorder, SSRI's simply don't work. In fact, they can trigger mania and increase depression under these conditions.

With MRI's they effect more than one neurotransmitter and typically take longer to saturate your brain and begin working. Once they work, they are great, however, they may remain part of your life for a long time, as they are very difficult to stop taking.

Lexapro is the most selective amongst antidepressants, as it takes little time to start working (about a week) compared to other SSRI's, has little side effects and is not that hard to stop taking.

When treating depression, your Dr. will have to target one of the 3 neurotransmitters mentioned above. So it's not a matter of which drug is more potent, they are equally effective if used properly and their use will be based on your diagnosis.

It's not a matter of potence....but it's how the antidepressant works with your chemistry. My husband takes Effexor, and it seems to take care of his anxioty, and keeps his moods at bay. I've tried Lexapro myself, but it really did nothing for me.

It all depends on the person. Lexapro is a new antidepressant.
