Photoshop does cost a lot of money to buy; un-needingly too. It's understandable as to why they price it so high, but then, there'd be so many other people like yourself who would buy it if it were cheaper.
In my opinion, Photoshop is the bees knees. I use it and think it's marvellous. However, there are FREE and LEGAL alternatives:
GIMPshop
http://www.gimpshop.net/
This is a free application that rivals Photoshop in features. It's fairly straight forward to use, and a great alternative to Photoshop if you don't wish to shell out the cash.
Paint.NET
http://www.getpaint.net/
This could also be considered an alternative to Photoshop, but it doesn't contain as many features as GIMPshop. Personally, I like the way this works; but it should probably be seen as a far more advanced version of Microsoft Paint. Oh, and this is free too.
Inkscape
http://inkscape.org/
And if you ever need a free alternative to Illustrator; why not try Inkscape. It's also free, and good.

You can get a trial version, absoloutely free of charge, for thirty days. Don't rule out paint shop pro or even Ulead PhotoImapct which is very similar and much, much cheaper.
Also, depending on how your ethics are, you could download an illegal version, or a crack. Try www.torrentz.com
Hope this helps.

Try GIMP. It is almost the same as Photoshop. And it's free.

there is photoshop elements which is a trimmed down version and it does most things general users would ever want. It is substantially cheaper.
there are lots of free ones available - though most only do basic stuff.

It depends on how confident you are with software packages. I would recommend you take a look at Paint.Net and The Gimp.
