We took our daughter to the eye specialist at the begining of the year due to lazy eyes, they did some tests and decided she shoud wear glasses. Since then we have noticed that the glasses are not helping and she still looks quite bos- eyed at times, more so when she is tired. On our recent check up at the hospital they told me that her eyes would not correct themselves and the only way to have them corrected is to have an opperation. On discussing this with my hisband we decided we would go ahead with this operation for our childs sake and to stop any bullying that could occur in the future. My daughter is 3 and we go to see the consultant tomorrow to discuss everything,I was just wondering if anyone had had this operation or what i should expect, really worried because of the uncertainties...thankyou

I had an operation for the same reason when i was about 6 although back then there was no such thing as laser surgery.I remember that it didn't seem like such a big deal to be back then but i think my poor parents were terrified for me.There was no mention at the time of any problems in later life although i've recently attended the hospital myself as i noticed 'spot type things' in both of my eyes. The consultant said that it's old scarring from my op as a child and so i'm due to go back in and have another small op to remove them.I'm not saying that the same thing will happen for your child but if i were you i'd ask about any complications in later life just so that you know rather than have someting sprung on you/your child further down the line.I also remember coming round after my op and the only pain i felt was a mild headache,no pain at all in my eyes.Hope that helps to reassure you a little.I was back to normal within a day or so.I'm sure everything will go fine for your daughter and she'll breeze through it.Best wishes to you all for when the time comes and take care x (p.s be brave mum and dad ;o))

Well i'm not sure how to answer this without sounding negative i am not trying to be honest.

My sister who is now 31 yrs old had the same operation when she was about 4 or 5 i think (so it was a few years ago)

Apparently it should have been a fairley straight forward operation.
But in my sisters case the surgeon shortened the muscle to much and she has still got a squint today.
And she has scaring on the white of her eye.

It has affected her all of her life, she is very embarrassed about it and has always covered her eye.

She did go back a couple of years ago to see if there was anything they could do, they said they could, but there would have been a very high chance of her being left with double vision, so she left it.

Anyway you asked if anyone knew of anybody that had it, and i have but not trying to be negative.

I am sure however that this is not a regular occurence and your little girl will be fine.
Today i am sure they have very different way they do things!!!

All the very best wishes are sent to your little girl.

I had this done about 25 years ago, I had the operation then had to wear sunglasses for about 6 weeks, after that I had to wear a patch over my good eye to force the muscles in my bad eye to work correctly. This was all done as a child and I am so gratefull that my parents put me forward for it.

If im really sleepy or drunk it may show, but usually so quickly that people think they have imagined it, most people dont even know I have a problem.

For you daughters sake, go ahead with it, she will really appreciate it when shes older and she is so young at the moment that she wont even remember there being a problem.

Also, my operation was 25 years ago, the advances in technology since then... well Im sure there is nothing too much to worry about.

Hi - I had this operation when I was 4 years old. I'm 23 now, and over the last few years the eye I had the operation on has started to be lazy again - when I am tired, it looks up on its own. I would suggest that once your daughter has had the operation, she religiously does any eye exercises the specialists gives her to do. I didn't do my eye exercises as much as I should, and believe that this is the reason my eye has reverted back to how it was when I was a toddler. Good luck.

my daughter is 3 now but she had the same eye operation when she was about 1 and a half years old. Everything went fine her eyes were red for about 2 weeks she had to have it done on both eyes. But her eyes didn't seem to bother her to much after the surgery. But now her right eye (her lazy eye) is starting to do it again so her eye doctor put glasses on and see if that would help.

I have had this both as a child and adult its nothing to it all that happens is they tie the muscle in the eye although there is no certaintee it wont happen again they can operate several times. If it changes as an adult there is an injection the give into the eye to relax the muscle I have had this to and no problems. Dont worry about it its not major surgery and they have been doning the op since my mum was little and she is in her 60s now. Hope all goes ok for you

You are making the best decision for your babe..............it must be so hard to do this as you just want to wrap your kid in cotton wool and protect them from everything .....even if it may benefit them.
Little girls are vain and I personally think parents who don't opt for these corrective eye operations are sometimes selfish or even lazy. You are doing right by your child. As the other posters have said it is an operation that is carried out thousands of times a year and there is little risk involved.

Your baby will be fine and you will be happy in years to come that you opted for this treatment!

it is a very simple operation and your daughter will be fine, this operation used to be performed a lot at one time but now is only left for the severe cases that do not clear up with glasses for 6 months and the good eye being covered allowing the lazy eye to do all the work

People are cruel and she is likely to be bullied if she doesnt have corrective surgery.

When I was younger I was in hospital and the little boy in the bed next to me had the same operation. He recovered so quickly from the op it was amazing. He kept poking me in the back with his toy machine gun, I could have throttled him!!!! lol.

I know as a parent that to put your child through any operation is scary, but she is young enough not to really remember the op, but the results could change her life so much for the better.
