I have a psychiatric disability and live with my parents. I am 36. I’m wondering what the disadvantages are to living with my parents. I’m not actively seeking a girlfriend. I’m not restricted physically and verbally but am wondering if being around my parents is affecting my ability to think freely. I changed my religion to Buddhist when I was largely living alone.

Definitely living with ones parents at the age of 36 is not healthy ,especially if either parent dominates or controls your life. You should find yourself an independent home and a loving girl friend or wife, and don't worry at the beginning you might have a a few ups and downs but you will soon be able to cope with your new environment. Good luck

Sure it will affect you in many ways. You may not be looking for a girlfriend, but if you happened to meet a girl and like her (looking or not) you live with your parents. :( A whole lot of problems go with living with parents and having a girlfriend, but you probably know that.
This all depends on your disability and if your independent or co-dependent. Are you depended and will be letting your parents take care of you in various ways? Or are you independent and will be taking care of yourself and be an equal in the house sharing responsibilities? If you have a mental disability, maybe being with your parents right now is a good thing and you might be needing their support. But if you depend on it too much, you could become emotionally crippled. It all depends. There's pros and cons to this and too many variables to answer.

ZIt sounds good to me if you are not looking for a gf. The only disadvantages of living with your parents is if you wanted to bring a girl home it would be uncomfortable. Living on your own helps you develop responsibility.

My question is why did you change your religion?

I think you're better to live with your parents whatever it takes. Make you busy with helping and caring your parents. Be a good and gentle man.
