I adopted my kitten when he was 7 weeks old. A little older than 5 but not much. He was to little to go in the litter box, so I kept an eye on him and every time he acted like he had to go, sniffing around more than usual, I put him in the litter box. After a couple of days he started going on his own. If the kitten has already gone on the floor, show him, tap his bum, tell him no and put him, immediately, in the litter box. They'll catch on, cats are geniuses!

Show the kittens where the box is and put them in it, doing the paw/digging for them. If the litterbox is in an area where there is alot of traffic, move it to a quiet location. Cats like their privacy too. You may have to keep them in a deep box that they can't get out, with their litterbox in it (sort of a settup like a cage) so they realize with needing a "clean" area in their space and the litterbox is for the "dirty" area, they will learn to separate the two. Also, rule of thumb is 1 cat- 2 boxes (different area of the house); 2 cats-3 boxes, and so on. Some cats do not like to share because of scent issues and cats are picky about cleanliness.

When the kitten does a poop outside the tray, carry it back to the tray, and show the kitten that is where it goes. Eventually the kitten will get the smell for it and enjoy to dig in the litter, if it does it somewhere else (regular like) then move the tray to that area.

most kittens learn by watching their mom do it. but if thats not the case just put them in the box and move their front paws back and forth in the litter. when they get out do it again. then wait awhile and do it after they eat. just keep doing that and they'll learn in no time. its instinct.

Banish all thoughts of training your cat as you would a dog. Although it's feasible at the hands of a professional trainer, it isn't very practical or affordable. You will want your cat to behave well, though, and you should be able to stop him from such undesirable practices as jumping up on the table to join you at mealtimes. Your coexistence will be a lot more pleasant and fun if the cat can be persuaded to come when he is called and to sharpen his claws on a scratching post instead of shredding the furniture.

Isn't their Mom doing that?

Just put the babies gently into the pan right after Mom uses it, and they should get the idea pretty quick! :-))
