My wife and I are in the US (different cities) on L1 visas. I would like to change my visa status from L1 to L2, obtain an EAD, and live and work in the same city as she is in. We are both from India. I'd really appreciate if someone can clarify the following questions -
1. Can I change my visa status from L1 to L2 while I am in the US? Or do I have to go back to India, apply for an L2 visa and then come into US?
2. How long does it usually take to get an EAD if you have an L2 visa (the assumption is that I'll not find it difficult to get a job in the US)?
3. If my wife goes back to India (even for a short while), how will that impact my visa status? Will I have to leave the country too?

I am very familiar with immigration but
I will advise you to either call and make an appointment with
an immigration officer
or go to uscis.gov to get your info
or check the Internet for Embassy of India to see if their is one near you
that will be the best way to get better info
The bad thing about immigration is that their rules & fees change
so often that when you have ?s the best place for you to get answers is usually from them (that will save you time & money )
Good luck
