I've always been told that white is the colour that makes things most spacious. So if you added decent lighting and say light curtains made out of something like Chiffon to let in lots of light it would maybe help?

First you have to choose a scheme for the room. For example pick a favourite colour which sets the right "mood" then work from there. You don't actually need to spend a lot of money to spruce up one room. My advice, paint one wall with a strong or bold colour like black or red (dont cringe) leave the other walls white. That is your starting point. Choose some simple but bold accessories to match your feature wall; ie cushions, art and accessories. Placing them mainly at the opposite side of the room from your feature wall gives the room a balanced feel. Do check out sales and markets for bargains but dont impulse buy or the room will feel crowded. Make a list of the types of thing you are looking for and stick to it, don't worry if you dont see the "perfect find" at first, these things take time. If you really dont want the fireplace you can always remove it if its fake but first make sure it is fake. Removing a real fireplace can devalue your property. If you arent too sure then keep it and make a focal point out of it. A large mirror with a simple frame above the mantle is an easy way to achieve this. If your still not sure, check out magazines such as ideal home, living etc, which offer helpful hints, ideas and inspiration.

There are come really great color effects out there these days. One thing that will make your room taller looking is to chose your ceiling paint and extend it down the wall 6" - 8". Go to your local hardware and have in mind what your accessories are get several color samples go home and ponder.
I painted my very small living room a light sage and it did not make it smaller looking. I also used very subtle window treatments to make the room look bigger. Mirrors can help too.

The fireplace is a nice centrepiece just for show, and white and creams are very modern. Maybe just put a laminate floor in and put some curtains up with a pattern in.

on the fire wall paint or paper (colour) so it stands out and then do the other three walls in a nice cream. matching cushions and curtains. leave curtains in tie backs and you could put some blinds up there too. on the cream walls put some nice landscape pictures making sure the frames are the same colour as your accent wall.

White is very modern. Try dressing the room up with coloured furniture and fabrics rather than paint.
If the fireplace does nothing for you, then get rid.

Color, Color, Color is the way to go. I agree that the fireplace can be a good focal point of the room. Choose a warm and inviting color that you like and go with it. You can also leave your walls white and just add color to the decor. Here's a few photos I'd like to share for ideas.

Start by picking the colors you want your room to be. Flip through magazines of anything and just look at the colors. From there, it will guide you with the rest.

Go on "Trading Spaces" with your best friend. She can re-do your room, and you can re-do hers.
