Well, there are CAT Scans where they take pictures of the brain in "slices" and there's an MRI, similar but much more detailed. CAT Scans are used before MRI's because they are cheaper and Insurance companies insist on it. And these are the only two ways to do it without cutting the top of your skull off. I'm not trying to be funny, just stating a fact.

A CAT scan or CT SCAN can be done to scan the head. Other than a CAT scan, the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) can also be used. It is safer than the head scan. No radiation exposure with MRI. Ultrasound scan can also be used to look at parts of the head e.g the eye socket, sinuses, and the anterior fontanelle in a baby. (fontanelle is the skin-covered opening in babies heads in the front that is soft and can be depressed).

Computerised Axial Tomography or C A T scan gives pictures of head in every plane. So the entire head can be visualised in parts. Magnetic Resonance Imaging or M R I uses ultra sound to film the same. These are easy cheap and non invasive.

CT scans are painless. There are MRIs amd PET scans too. In all of them, you go inside a long tube and you just lay there while the machine gets the images it needs. Of course, there are standard x-rays, but the other tests are more definitive. Best wishes.

A head scan is an EEG and I am sure that with the technology today there is other ways of scanning the brain. If you are serious, check around with your Dr.'s. Find one that is more up to date with technology.

Scans can be done by MRI or x-ray. Outside of cutting the skull open there is no other way.
