Farts are gases produced when stomach acids and bacteria breakdown your food. Once the bacteria has broken down your food it bercomes reundant and is expelled into your bowel along with fibres from the food you have eaten. The gas and solid stools smell because they have reacted and been broken down by bacteria.

I don't think it's weird that you don't mind someone else's fart. I have a friend who likes the smell of hair that hasn't been washed in a week and another who loves the smell of sweat drenched football players. Try eating more fruits, drinking more water. I basically do that and when I fart, there's no smell. :]
