German is a tough language to learn, with complicated grammar and word order. You WILL NOT learn it overnight.
However, if you really ARE serious about wanting to learn it, why not take an evening class? Self-teach books are ok for a while but it's easy to get bored, uninspired or feel too busy to continue with it. German penpals/living in the country may work, but I'm not sure it's a good idea if you have no knowledge of German yet. They'd probably be more useful to you once you've learnt some of the basics because then you can put what you've learnt into practice.

Like any language you'll need to spend time learning the rules of grammar etc, especially if you want to be able to write correctly in German. A quick way of picking it up is probably to try and make German friends, so that you can practise with them. Maybe watch German films with English subtitles or vice versa. I'd say the quickest way is probably to immerse yourself in the country and culture - spend time in Germany and you'd probably pick it up really quickly.
The BBC has a website which can help you learn. The website is:

With German there is no "quick and easy" method. It's a tough language to learn, but not impossible. My 5 year old can speak some German, so there is hope for anyone!!

I would make a phone call to the German Embassy and request that they make an attempt to overthrow, Poland, Austria, or Russia,
Sit back and wait a couple of weeks, and watch the international news channels like for instance Sky, Watch for a French surrender to the germans (this is key)
Next phone call should then be to the department of defence suggesting more troops be dispatched to Iraq in order to give the Germans ease of access from France to the South coast of England
Again then sit back and wait for the Germans to invade your town.
I would then suggerst that you mix with the iinvading hoardes and try to socialise in as many ways as possible.
This may get you tagged as a collaborator, but will undoubtably keep you alive to practice the German language
Hope this helps

If you *want* to learn it, why are you so bothered about avoiding putting the effort in? Unfortunately, as with many disciplines, you'll only get out as good as you put in, so if you're already looking for shortcuts, I'd reassess whether you really want to learn German at all.

Look for a 'Fluency Fast' class. (google) There aren't very many yet, but the method used (one week intensive) gives you a great base to continue your study. I think the classes are listed at TPRStorytelling.com Most of them happen in the summer.

i chanced on that german grew to become into uncomplicated to learn (many of the sounds and words are fairly much comparable). additionally, it particularly is less complicated to sound greater fluent in German with the aid of its problematic vowels and English-like flow. i've got in no way sat right down to learn French yet from my acquaintances who do know it, it sounds broken and not flowing interior the way the language demands, like what you hear the natives talk. yet another user-friendly language that i chanced on uncomplicated grew to become into... Spanish. yet once you prefer to artwork between u.s. and Canada, that does no longer be advantageous.

Go to Germany, that is the only thing that worked for me. And when you are there: DO NOT SPEAK ENGLISH!
I tried books, tapes, CDs, courses. Coming to Germany was the only thing that produced great results. After three weeks, I could converse.
