Exactly, well said. Kveldorgondlier has said it several times "how you train is how you fight."
it's a tough stigma to break once someone has it in their minds.
I mean look at the UFC match between Matt Hughes and Royce Gracie, Gracie is one formidable fighter in JuJitsu, but he was beaten by someone who more than likely came with a better strategy, and who had experience both as a Greco-Roman wrestler in highschool and college who also learned JuJitsu.
Now seeing someone so well trained in JuJitsu like Royce get beaten, does that mean that JuJitsu sucks alltogether?
No it doesn't, every Martial Art has a practical application's use for it's techniques, and it's all in how the INDIVIDUAL uses those techniques accompanied by how well they've put the time and effort to train.
and the whole part of it is just as you said "adapting to the real situaton". and that's why you train to learn how to use the techniques in a practical situation.
excellent question.

That is what I have been saying for a long time....it isn't about style as much as it is about how its used. Too many people don't bother to teach the practical side of the martial arts anymore. You are correct in that all styles have there flaws even as they have their strengths...IF you train to USE the skills you're learning then you will be able to use them...if not....then you wont. I have seen far to many people that weren't taught the practical use of their techniques lose in street fights, even if they were good in competiton, and decide it was the fault of the style they studied rather than from improper teaching....it is that kind of experience that has made the martial arts in the US fall so far behind the rest of the world, that and the fact that this push for aesthetics over practicality has infultrated the martial arts community in the US like a virus...
A return to Tradition and effectiveness is what is needed...

You are right, it takes a minimum of 2 hours a day and more like 6 hours to stay really good. Most people have this idea martial arts is just some secret acrobat techniques. But, you know what? I've seen bar brawlers completely wipe out so-called martial arts experts. There is some natural ability that some guys have based on height and muscle tone.

This is the dumbest question of the day. A little funny too, I'll admit, but mostly stupid :p And no, marines are not banned from the UFC. In fact, marines do not really have that much close combat training at all. The special operations groups, such as devgru and delta are usually trained in Krav Maga however.

Hmmm.hard question to ask correctly and just as hard to answer as theres so many different ways to look at it.the first thing i suppose is what do want to get out of it?do you want to apply it in the ring so you only want to learn enough to win a fight from now to your next one?do you want to make it a lifestyle(this is really the only way)do you want to defend yourself for real or just learn because you have a situation at the time?etc.etc.2nd.what do you want to put back in?etc.anyway if you learn to emulate someone you also learn there bad things to.a good teacher should know what thier bad things are and not so much change themselves but make sure noone else emulates them.as someone else said theres not bad styles only bad teachers.fair enough comment but you can be the best teacher in the world but if the person your teaching doesn't want to learn or he thinks he knows more than you you'll never teach them anything.who do they blame?the teacher or the style!theres bad teachers yes but theres also a hell of a lot of bad students to.the only bad within a style is the fact that to an extent they dont help their teachers enough with structure,support,etc.etc.etc.students give up because they believe the style or teacher arn't,giving them what they need teachers give up because they dont think the style is giving them what they need, the style (the people or person above the teacher) give up on him because they dont think he's doing the right thing by them and round and round we go.everyone needs someone to blame its human nature.now i've read what i've said i do think there are bad styles but it's not because ones better or worse than another it's partly because of the reasons i just briefly outlined.theres bad styles, teachers and students but none of them are going to blame themselves.no one is flawless whether it be the master the people he teaches to teach or the students.even gods not flawless i should no because i did actually make a mistake hmm when was it hmm hahaha just kiddin'PS.sorry about the typo's etc ive tried to fix them but they wont fix???????

Style does have some affect. Most styles have potiental, but some are totally trash!
For example if one style leave themselve in rigorous stance and try to fight face to face against someone who move around a lot, that person would be a mess.
There's so many example, but... yes styles does have some affect, but most martial arts have potiental if trained properly.

I wish I knew. I don't know how many times I & many others on this board have answered that question. I guess some people think that there is some "magic" system that they can learn instantly & be Bill Bad-ss where ever. Humans are so illogical.

It just comes down to the fight in the dog... plain and simple. I have a friend who brawls (he is insane). We go to my mixed gym all the time and he cleans the floor with "BJJ experts".
