In theory Blu-Ray has some technical advantages over HD-DVD, but in practice (at least to date) HD-DVD provides superior results because producers have made some smarter decisions that allow them to operate closer to the potential of the medium than producers of Blu-Ray disks. For discussion see the links. I particularly recommend you read the first one on the marketing of Blu-Ray and HD-DVD .... illuminating!
That said, both provide results that are superior to regular DVDs BUT the experts (See an example at the last link) recommend that consumers avoid buying either for at least the next 6 months to a year.
The bottom line is the two formats are incompatible and, to date, show every sign of being in a war to the death. It is not really clear that either will survive since they are -- for many consumers -- a solution looking for a problem.
While players are backwards compatible (and will therefore play regular DVDs), only the HD-DVD player is low enough priced (Toshiba HD-A1 is available for under $500 US) to justify buying now -- and then only if you need a new player now.
Personally, I won't even consider buying now. I was burned on Beta vs VHS, and bought into SACD and DVD-A. This latest war shows every indication of being at least as expensive for consumers, but unlike the VCR wars, HD DVDs (of either stripe) don't provide a sufficient advantage over regular DVDs to justify jumping until the conclusion is a lot clearer.

I saw both HD DVD and Blueray at Best Buy and i was not impressed with either one ?
My DVD at home looked just as good so i would not believe all the hype until the prices come down to affordable levels .
The only advantage is the discs will hold more extras such as commentaries and trailers ( do we really need 3 more featurettes ) .

If you are referring to picture quality, there is a large variabiliy in both formats depending on the source material. The general feeling is that neither format is up to its full potential. Many movies on Blu-ray look little better than standard DVD. At this point HD-DVD seems to be "more often better" than Blu-ray, and at its best is better than the best Blu-ray. However, everyone expect this to change and eventually it is likely that there will be little difference between the two.

sure. for my area. A twin layer Blueray holds 50gb jointly as the HD merely holds 30gb. they are additionally experimenting with a quad layer which might carry 100gb. The greater cabinet area, the greater extras they are able to positioned on a single DVD. Plus there is greater area for greater decision, whilst such kit will become available.
