As a professional artist and writer (for 27 years), I too have
carpal tunnel but worse in my right wrist.
I have never even considered surgery, too many bad reports
from people I know who have had it done.
Ice packs work wonders for me, and stops the pain for hours
at a time, especially at night when I seem to have the most pain.
I lay the ice pack along the top of my thumb and onto my wrist.
It's quite painful at first, as it begins to freeze the nerves.
After about 20 minutes I take the packs off and the pain has gone.
Yes, sometimes I have to do it for several days in a row, but I'd
do it every day rather than surgery.

What kind of exams are you appearing for? Written? Well, if you have the surgery quick enough you may be able to do your written exams. However, consider the severity of your current pain from CTS? If you can handle it, then have it done after your exams. This depends on how important your hands are with respect to the exam. Talk to your doctor about this as well.

my friend just had the surgery last month, the first week she was pretty much unable to do anything for herself but by the end of the second week she was much better, now a month later she is 100% back to normal, if you are having exams in January you should be 100% able to take your exams as you will be all healed

After a successful surgery, you should have immediate relief from your symptoms. By three weeks, you should have recovered provided your nerve has not been entrapped for a long time. It's only November so you will probably be OK by January.
