Situps and crunches will do NOTHING for your back. Do back extensions/hyperextensions. Instructions are at: http://www.ajc.com/health/content/health/flex/superman111005.html
I prefer to do them over a fit-ball since it allows a wider range of motion, but it's up to you.
More importantly if you have a bad back is look after your posture. Don't slouch or hunch over - ever, use a lumbar roll (it's a cushion that supports the lumbar section of your back when you're sitting down, and at night tie a towel round your stomach to give your lower back some support.
I know it sounds excessive but it really will make it a lot better.

You should check this sciatica natural treatment http://cure-sciatica.info
Normally, I would not answer a question like this as my expertise is generally in medication but I had severe sciatica while I was pregnant with my 3rd child (after having had twins) and I had sciatica so bad that I was finding it difficult to walk. I tried massage therapy and physical therapy and could not take medication
I went to the chiropractor and the pain was instantly relieved. My hips and lower back were out of alignment because I had carried twins the year before. On occasion a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) can also work but they usually only work on one joint at a time - the chiropractor will do your whole back which works faster. Anyone who does not believe in chiropractors will tell you they are quacks - don't listen.
I don't necessarily believe that chiropractors can cure things like diabetes but they can definitely relieve some types of back pain especially if a pinched nerve is involved which is usually the cause of sciatica. Try a reputable chiropractor ASAP!

See all the different answers folks. And they all say they "work"! What does that tell us?
Simply, there are many different forms of back pain and there are just as many or more different reasons/causes of back pain.
Just because your back is sore doesn't mean that's where you look to fix it. Tight and/or injured hamstrings, quadriceps, psoas, quadratus lumborum and leg length difference are the most common causes. Some of these 'causes' can also be caused by an imbalance of some sort elsewhere in the body.
What's the answer?
Seek professional help. Someone that knows how to properly assess your body's condition. (That rules out your family MO/GP).

There is a number of excersises to strengthen your lower back at home but i feel this is the best one. It is called Dead lifts (make sure you lift an ideal weight you feel comfortable with first because f the weight is to heavy you can injure you buttocks and thighs as well as your lower back.)this is how you do it: Stand with your feet shoulder width apart, bend down until your thighs are parallel with the floor, hold the barbell or dumbbells just above your feet, with arms on the outside of your legs. keeping your back straight and chin up, look straight ahead. Breathe out slowly as you lift the weights up from the floor, until you are standing straight. Breathe in as you slowly lower the weights back to the floor and resume the starting posistion. Reapeat excersise 10 times. I hope this works for you because it as helped me.

I think proper Yoga would help. You could buy yourself a book on Yoga and find out what's best for you in there.
