More countries use 220-240 Volts than use 110 Volts.

There are very significant disadvantages to using 110 Volts.

I am residing here in the Philippines, the reason why we are using 220 volts is because most of the appliances that are manufactured and imported in our country are 220-240 volts and the MERALCO (the electricity provided in Luzon, the largest island) wants to have a higher profit.

The premise of the question indicates that the poser is NOT a world traveller - for instance UK uses 240-250 volts. But perhaps the reason lies elsewhere - a matter of being ... er shock proof??

220 VAC is more convenient than 110 VAC, because 220 VAC drives less amperes, amperes are the problem in high current devices because the warming of conductors.

In Brazil, some cities use 110V and other cities use 220V. And it doesn't depend on the state where you live, because in São Paulo they use 110V while here in the city where I live (which is less than 100km far from São Paulo) we use 220V.

So, it's not only in the Philippines...
