There are some Fundamentalists around here who hold up big signs on weekend nights in one of the bar districts, informing everybody that they're going to hell for sucking down a margarita. They've been doing it for years. Most people think they're serious nutjobs. I'm a Catholic, and I prefer my religion to be a bit more sutble than that. Let God sort out the sinners; it's not in my job description.

Unfortunately, some people are stupid, and think people will start believing in God because of things like this. I understand that this would only make you fear God if you believed in him in the first place, so I see no point. Jesus said to preach the gospel, or the good news. Fear is not good news, so these people are sending the wrong message. Please ignore them and try to look at christians in a better light, not that of the stupid radicals.

Hi, yes I agree with you, some people still have not got it right, and it`s usually the sign carriers, the word fear is not quite accurate and was not properly translated, for fear read (in total awe of) and not the english meaning of fear.
God does not want His children to be cowering in terror but to respect the majesty of God.

Well, the truth about Hell and Heaven is expressed in various types of evangelism and each type will speak differently to different people.
So "fire and brimstone" will reach some but not others, whilst a more placid approach will speak to others in the same way.
As for me, I believe there's alot of mileage in saying it "how it is", so I support people warning us of the dangers of hell because hell is not an imaginary place. In fact it is such a dreadful place of unimaginable torment - eternal torment - that I wouldn't wish anyone to go there. This is because the depth of horror is beyond out own concepts of human suffering; God created hell for Satan and the angels who fell with him from Heaven, it was never meant for us. That's why it is such a terrible, terrible, terrible place.
I'm telling you, it's real. Read the story of Lazarus, Luke 16:20 - 31. In fact I'll repro it here for convenience:
"Luk 16:20 There was also a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who used to be brought to the rich man's door,
Luk 16:21 hoping to eat the bits of food that fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs would come and lick his sores.
Luk 16:22 The poor man died and was carried by the angels to sit beside Abraham at the feast in heaven. The rich man died and was buried,
Luk 16:23 and in Hades, where he was in great pain, he looked up and saw Abraham, far away, with Lazarus at his side.
Luk 16:24 So he called out, 'Father Abraham! Take pity on me, and send Lazarus to dip his finger in some water and cool off my tongue, because I am in great pain in this fire!'
Luk 16:25 But Abraham said, 'Remember, my son, that in your lifetime you were given all the good things, while Lazarus got all the bad things. But now he is enjoying himself here, while you are in pain.
Luk 16:26 Besides all that, there is a deep pit lying between us, so that those who want to cross over from here to you cannot do so, nor can anyone cross over to us from where you are.'
Luk 16:27 The rich man said, 'Then I beg you, father Abraham, send Lazarus to my father's house,
Luk 16:28 where I have five brothers. Let him go and warn them so that they, at least, will not come to this place of pain.'
Luk 16:29 Abraham said, 'Your brothers have Moses and the prophets to warn them; your brothers should listen to what they say.'
Luk 16:30 The rich man answered, 'That is not enough, father Abraham! But if someone were to rise from death and go to them, then they would turn from their sins.'
Luk 16:31 But Abraham said, 'If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone were to rise from death.' "
