you are supposed to go out to the wilderness alone and wait for it to come to you.

As said above, a spirit guide can be encountered while waiting "in the wilderness." However, the "wilderness" can mean many things, only one of which is actually what we would call the wilderness.

The "wilderness" is any place you can find a quiet place to meditate and/or pray. Traditionally, the practice was paired with fasting, though that may not be practical in this day and age. By clearing your mind and trying to connect with the "Spirit of the World," a seeker can meet their spirit guide. Meditation is the key. Spirit guides manifest differently depending on the individual. Your spirit guide will be personal to you.

Note that there are many misconceptions about spirit guides. Although some mistakenly consider spirit guides to be evil or demons (as can be noted in some of the answers above), this is not the case. Spirit guides are astral helpers (what Christians call Guardian Angels) that are both companions and teachers.

Although seeking spirit guides is not necessarily a Buddhistic practice, below is a link to a site on meditation.

I will pray that you find your guide.

When you confess Jesus Christ as your Lord and your Savior the Holy Spirit (your Spirit guide) comes and lives inside of you as a temple of God. The Holy Spirit will teach you, guide you and empower you to live your life more abundantly.

I met my spirit guide the moment I trusted Jesus Christ for full payment for my sin. He then sent the Holy Spirit to guide me, to comfort me, and to carry my prayers to the LORD when I am hurting too much to even put them into words.

a spirit guide is for the sole purpose of mediumship development
unless you are studying mediumship then it is most likely you wont meet with your guide for two reasons
one is what i have already mentioned
and the other is ... unless you study seeing and speaking with spirit ... how can you see and speak with spirit ( to put it bluntly )
this isnt to say that we dont all have spirit who walk through life with us ... a guardian if you wish
if you are studying mediumship then the guides may make themself known to you through guided visualisations or meditations
or a medium may see your guide and relay information to you

Go into your room and close the door. Make sure there are no disturbances and that you are alone. Kneel at the foot of your bed and close your eyes. If your are sincere about your search, what comes next will benefit you forever. Say aloud "God...do you exist? If so, who are you? What are you? Are you Bhudda, Mohammed, Mother Nature, Jesus Christ? I'm without guidance in this world. Please help me. What is the truth?"

You have to believe in the guide first, then brainwash yourself into thinking you met it.
