Because the default state of belief is disbelief, we are born not believing in anything, then discover as we grow up. I have yet to hear a logical argument for the existence of god, so my state of disbelief still exists. I could ask you what is the source for your disbelief in purple flying elephants, you would answer the same as I have; you were born naturally not believing, and have yet not had any evidence to point towards their existence hence the logical point of view would to be not believing in them. I hope this helps you to understand our logic, even if you may disagree with it.

I suppose I could accept the theoretical existence of a God, in the sense of an infinite omniscient and omnipotent being who is beyond time and eternal. I accept that it is possible since there are many things that we humans do not know about and may or may not discover to exist. It really doesn't matter to me - I still have to get up and go to work in the morning, either way.
What I am certain of is that there are no religions or doctrines or beliefs which were -not- created by human beings. While a God may or may not exist - I am absolutely certain that there has never been any contact between any human and such a being. All religions bear obvious signs of human fabrication.
Common life experience has taught me that human beings will tell lies and make up stories in order to manipulate other people, especially if there is some benefit to be gained. So why should I bother looking for a supernatural agency when a perfectly natural one is plainly evident.
I make no attempt to find an axiom for disbelief - I simply do not accept the ones that are presented by the "pro-belief" side of the debate because those axioms are self-serving and manipulative.
Personally I do not concern myself with the question, the only issue is whether or not I have the same legal rights and freedoms as those who espouse a given belief. I deny the idea that anyone should be given superior privileges over anyone else. I feel that anyone's right to pursue their freedoms rights or privileges should stop at the point where it interferes with anyone else's freedoms rights or privilege.

Not being an atheist, I'm not particularly apt to answer this, but I'll try. First off, all people are different, different atheists have different reasons for not believing in any gods. However, most atheists I know use the common proof method to disprove the existence of such divine beings. A main point would be, if any one religion is right, then why haven't its gods always defended it. Also, the whole hell thing is actually a very new idea, since ancient Jews did not believe in hell, many still don't, many christians agree with this theory and many other religions just don't believe such a place exists, either. I can see the sign mentioned being a reason to disbelieve chrsitianity and judaism, but you have to remember that radicals will do things that most people in a religion will not do. I hope this answer helps!

The same question could be asked to believers. What makes you so sure a god exists? What do you base your asumptions on? A book written by people thousands of years ago who spread messages of morality and consequence through stories. How do you know these aren't just that, stories and people have been niavely beleiving for millenia?
The greek, roman and norse gods have all long since been dismissed as myths, so why does your god make it into the realms of reality? Why is this so different from mythology?

I think most atheists know there is some higher being but the notion of praying and getting stuff is so ludicrous that we can't see how religion has any basis or believers. Most religious people were brainwashed at a very young age, cannot deal with the fact that they are mortal, or need a way to make decisions. If you step on an ant, what happens to the ant's soul? He doesn't rate one? Why do we? We are horrible compared to the humble ant.
When I travel through the Sawtooth mountains during a sunset, it's difficult to imagine no god. When I see a baby dieing due to starvation, I can't imagine a god. Since MY god allows sunsets and horrible death, it makes sense to me.

You see, when something is not proven, I do not see why we must even start of believing it. For example, I say that there is something called Zalco Zoom. There is no evidence for it. Will you still believe it just because I say that you will go to heaven if you believe? If you do, then I would say that it is utter blindness. Why do you people want to be blind just because some people wrote about god in some book? I completely agree with JuglingSuns. The creation of gods, heavens and hells was just so to ignite fear in people so that they will live morally and with the right values.

We don't believe in god because there's, as of yet, absolutely no evidence to suggest that one exists...
The concept of gods has been around for a long time, and there is still no evidence for it...
The belief in a god, as I see it, is illogical, because there is no reason to even assume one exists.
If there was any positive evidence of a god, even the slightest bit, then it wouldn't be completely illogical to believe in it... And the bible isn't evidence... The bible, along with all the other holy texts, are the propositions, and there has to be external corroborating evidence to support them, which there isn't.
As well, after consideration, I found the whole concept to be faulty.

Honestly, the source are the christians. They blanket a great message with politics, unacceptance, rules and fear. That is how christians display god to the atheists, no wonder they dont want to belive in your god. There was a guy at my school yesterday with a huge sign that said "FEAR GOD". now you tell me. Who the HELL would want to learn about a god that is so fearful people have to hold signs warning everyone. YOU TELL ME

It's because of the sheer lack of any credible evidence for the existence of god at all. There is a full list of why to say no to jesus (and other fictional characters presented as real) on my website http://www.saynotojesus.tk

If you are Atheist is had to be that you believe that you believe in nothing. All other religions believe in something. Gold Statues. Creators in the Sky. If you are truly of a religion you should have to believe in something even if it's not a tangible something, it should be something.
