alchemy was the practice of mixing different substances in an attempt to make some different element such as turning lead into gold. it was what would later develop into what we know as the science of chemistry. it was very poular during the fourth through fourteenth centuries in europe. with the resurgence of scientific pursuits, it was soon changed into the pursuit of knowledge of chemical reactions.

On the surface, alchemy is the theoretical process of transmuting lead into gold. However, that is only on the surface.

What the Greeks proposed when developing their version of alchemy is semi-metaphysical transformation from impure to pure. Impurity, to the Greeks, was represented by lead (Saturn) and purity was respresented by gold (the Sun). However, alchemy has existed in many cultures throughout the world, some of which existed well before the ancient Greeks.

Below is a Wikipedia article on the subject. It is pretty good, though I disagree with the author on a few points. Still, it's pretty good.
