A dog needs walked for at least a few minutes, three times per day, unless it is a puppy, which would need an outing every 2 hours..Just keeping a good kibble down and a clean water bowl won't take that much time..You would want a smallish dog, if big poo is a problem..I would think one of these mixes would be an adaptable medium small dog> http://search.petfinder.com/search/search.cgi?action=1&pet.Animal=Dog&pet.Breed=schnauzer&pet.Age=Young&pet.Size=&pet.Sex=&location=CA&preview=1&scope=0&x=2&y=9
Just put in your own zip code to find the ones nearest you, and then click on any pic for more information..
However, if you are not going to be home at least 1/2 of the day, your dog would become stressed and howl the whole time you are gone, as they are such sociable critters, and need to be with family..
I worked nights, days, and midshift..My dogs didn't have any trouble keeping up with my schedule..

I don't think you should get a dog. Dogs need space to run and play, and it would not have that in a dorm. The day and night shift would maybe be alright for an older dog. I would say that a puppy would never learn the basic things it should know if you are constantly changing your schedule, which would also mean changing his or hers. Any dog that is a puppy could make a HUGE mess, but it's all how you train them. Which comes back to you changing your schedule so often. Dog is not a good idea right now. Try getting a smaller animal, even a fish.Once you can have a bigger space for a dog, then you could consider it, but right now, you are not ready.

sounds like you need a stuffed one if you are still living in a dorm. Most of what are breeders? Don't get a large dog if you don't want a big mess. I think it is personality of whether a dog would want to sleep in bed w/ you. There are a few dogs that are sm enought that you can litter or box train. That upkeep would be easier than a dog that you need to take out. But once again, if you don't want to work @ taking care of a dog get a stuffed one, or one of those electronic ones for you computor or something

I wouldn't have thought that you can keep a dog in a dorm?
Anyway, if large poops are a problem... you would need a small - medium sized dog.
I would not suggest getting a puppy as you would NEED to take him/her out to go potty every 2 hours until it is fully house-broken
Some dogs you might be interested in are: Maltese, Shih-Tzu, Beagle, Chihuahua (if you can put up with all the yapping), Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Miniature-Poodle or a Pug.
Please look up any breeds that you may be interested in. A website that hosts a LOT of information about ALL breeds of dogs (incl. most mixes) is www.dogbreedinfo.com
You could always go to your local rescue shelter and adopt a small-medium sized cross breed.
Please consider ALL responsibilities of owning a dog before considering buying one.

a low energy type of dog would probably work for you. i would suggest something small such as a poodle or a Maltese. Check on the Internet about low energy type dogs, that could be a help. The upkeep on a dog can be expensive with shots, spaying/neutering plus grooming if need be. Remember to do your homework

honey, you're not ready for a dog...you can't have a dog in a dorm, you have to train dogs to go outside and you have to have them spayed or neutered. Buy a stuffed animal to sleep with until you find a human mate, you'll be better off and you won't have a poor dog that loves you being left off in some neighborhood when you're tired of her.

go to the animal shelter and pick up a small to medium dog, i would suggest an austrailian shepard, they are smart since dogs love people they adapt to a lot of housing situations as long as their person is around.
