The problem with modern car radios is that the frequency step is different between US and UK. You might get some stations, but some would be garbled, or simply skipped. I dont' remember the exact steps, but I believe in the US it's 200 Khz, and in the UK, 100Khz. (not 100% sure) so the American radio will miss a number of stations in the UK.
Some portable world-band radios have selectors for this, but most car radios do not. Analog tuning will solve this problem, but just because a radio has a knob instead of buttons doesn't necessarily mean that it has analog tuning. You really need to look at the dial to see how it's changing.
Best bet, unless you've got an expensive radio, is to replace it when you get to the UK.

As far as I know, yes. Unlike tele that is more discrete, radio signals are slightly variable. If the radio has a manual tuner one would simply turn the dial until the station picks up. If automatic, the radio will move upward or down as you command, and find the signals in that manner, then you can put them into your presets.
As far as shortwave, such as BBC World Service, those bands are not in car radios that I know of anyway. If you want to get fancy, however, you might want to check out what the BBC has to say on the subject:

Car Radios do not depend upon local power, so they will work anywhere that there is a radio signal to receive. It all depends upon broadcast frequencies.
We used to listen to Germany play music for us on a short wave radio.

only if the radio has analog tuning (the old dial knob type). the auto radios made for the US that are digital are preset to the radio frequencies allowed in the US and wont adjust. the old fashion dial types are adjustable.
