What rhetorical devices do advertising and media use, and why do you think they are so effective?

"A rhetorical device is a technique, sometimes called a resource of language, used by an author or speaker to induce an emotional response. These emotional responses are central to the meaning of the work or speech, and should also get the listener (or the reader's) attention"

So in advertising it is all about how to induce an emotional response using particular words or combinations to make you 'feel' something.

In advertising actual images in combination might also be important, like close ups of coffee beans or chocolate sauce with the words fresh, creamy, smooth help evoke an emotional response
