I have 2 seventeen years olds, 1 fourteen yr old, and an eleven year old in my home. There is a 9-9:30 curfew for the teens and an 8/p curfew for the 11 yr. old during the week unless there is a game, band, or work that night. All incoming calls must end at 9 pm. In the beginning they complained that they weren't "tired". Now they have come to appreciate the value of a routine and at least a full 8-10 hours sleep during the school week. They wake up energetic and don't get sleepy in school. All of them are honor roll students. During the weekends though they haven't any curfew unless they are going out and then it depends upon what the activity is. No meaningless driving around. There is always a designation and a plan. We have been doing this since they began school and it works very well.

My parents never gave me a bed time when I was in high school! 11:20 on weeknights isn't that late, but if they keep it up, it will gradually get later and later which will result in them not being able to wake up in the morning for school. Tell them that you'd like them to stop watching TV/using the computer after 11 on weeknights and see what they say.

Kids are too old for a bedtime when they are the ones paying the bills. :) Having a bedtime teaches them responsibility. All my kids had bedtimes until they graduated high school. As parents, it's our duty to teach the children how to survive once they're on there own. By setting a bedtime, and explaining why (so you can have the energy and alertness required to make it through the day), we are helping them become successful adults. Too many people set no limits for their kids, which is why it's SO hard to find a good employee these days. They want to stay up and party all night and expect me to not be upset when they show up late for work.

LOL We have 4 teenagers, 3 of whom are in High School. I havent ever thought about NOT having a bed time, LOL.. They have to be in bed by 930, but can read or watch tv. Its funny though, they are all sound asleep by 10. I just think we all need our sleep and staying up until all hours of the night isnt healthy. On Friday and Saturdays they can stay up however late they would like, but if they are out with their friends they have to be in our house by 1130.

I would say 11:00 lights out. Most adults go to bed that time anyway! It's your house and your rules. I know around here that kids in HS have to get up by 6:30 latest and they do need 7-8 hours of sleep.

I still have a bed time. I try to get to bed before 11:30pm. What I mean to say is that if your kids can understand the benefits of sleep and self regulate sensibly then they are ready to not have a strict "bed time". I am bad, I stay up all night. So my bed time of 11:30pm is imposed on me by my wife :) I am 31. Good luck.

Midnight I think would be reasonable for a weeknight, but if they have a lot of studying to do it's okay to stay up later, they are at an age when they will be able to get up in the morning even with less sleep.

If there seniors they are 17 or older.....bed time hahah!!! Look the bedtime thing should stop after 14. Kids need to learn on their own how much sleep they should get. Plus if they are up late they could be studying or doing homework. Just let them be. Your kids are only months away from adulthood and you have to realize that.

As long as my kids are in my house, they'll have a bedtime, even if they are 20! I have a bedtime for crying out loud! Sometimes that freedom is just too much for even an 18 year old to make good choices about. Better to have one and your kids stay awake in class than to not.
