Any kind of development will affect the water quality. Wastes and runoff flow into our rivers and streams and are carried into the bays and deltas of the major rivers of the US. Those pollutants are spread into the ocean where they remain, usually biomagnifying. Emissions like sulfer oxides and nitros oxides escape into the air and create acid rain that falls on ocean waters. Normally, natural waters will have a natural buffer system in place but sometimes the change in pH will be too much and will make the waters more acidic. We can't drink polluted water obviously, so the amount of freshwater available to us is shrinking, as is the case globally.
