i recently got a new cat, and she HATES the dogs. they are naturally curious, but she wont let them anywhere near her. if the cat and dog are new to each other, then this is definitely typical behavior. If the cat hasn't been around dogs too much, or at all, then you are just going to have to bear with them as they all adjust. My only recommendation is to give the cat a place where only they can go... i have a tall kiddie fence set up in the doorway of her room, so only she can get in or out of there, and this allows her the chance to see and smell the dogs without having to worry about them. when she gets more confident she will eventually venture out on her own. as for getting the dog to leave her alone... if she comes out of her room, then all bets are off. the dogs are going to try sniffing her, but after my jack russel got scratched by her then he learned to leave her alone. that is the only way i know how to truly teach them to stay apart... you could keep them permanantly separate, but that's just a headache all the way around. i would leave them to their own devices and figure it out on there own- just make sure the cat has somewhere it can go to get away from the dog until it gets more comfortable.

It's not likely that you can, in my experience. I had three cats and a dog together for years. One cat was totally cool with the dog, who was a very aloof Labrador. The other two didn't like him at all in varying degrees. One would move high or leave when the dog came in a room. Not like he was scarred, but the cat would be asleep, the dog comes in a sits near me. The cat opens his eyes, sits up, glares at the dog and me sleepily, stretches and leaves the room to go sleep somewhere else. My other cat would hiss whenever the dog got within a foot of her. I'd reach down and pet the cat, and the dog would stand still and look at us, and the cat just kept her eyes on the dog and hissed and moved away. That's just how they were, they never got used to each other. I put cat treats near the dog--two would not come near, the other cat came right over and ate and moved on. It just depends what an individual animals nature is...EXCEPTION: get a cat close to and familiar with a friendly dog when it's a small kitten-kittens may be scarred at first, but will warm up a lot after a week or so when not eaten by the dog. And later in life, the cat will at the lease be OK sharring space with a dog.
Just ignore the hissing, push the cat away if he swats or lunges at the dog. And sternly discourage any agression from the dog. Even friendly, agressive gestures from the dog are scarry and will provoke your cat. Discourage your dog from getting close or moving toward your cats. If he pays any attention to them, sternly call his name, and pet him when he looks/comes your way. After a while of co-existing, the cat will stop most of the hissing.

We had a dog and a cat, and the cat did the same thing yours is. Cats are very territorial, and it probably feels really threatened by the dog's presence in her space. I wouldn't worry too much.... the cat can defend itself and if the dog gets too close will claw the dog in the nose or find a hideout too high for the dog to reach. After a while your dog will realize that the cat owns the home.

Cats just usually dont like dogs unless they grew up with a dog in the houshold. if your cat hisses just squeeze the back of your cats neck(cats will usually stop what they are doing when you do this because thier mothers did it to them when they were little and it was usually because they were being bad.)

Are they new to each other. That could be a reason. My dog and cat wrestle and at bedtime they sleep together. They're best friends. They weren't for the first month though after bringing home our new kitty. It took a little while. Now they act like they cant function without each other.

You cant.... after a while the dog will bite the cat the cat will scratch the dog and it will be all better they will get over it themselves.

It's actually not that big a deal. That's pretty typical cat behavior; and unless your dog is scared, there's no need to change it.

yeah... cats are bitchy. period. and if it really bothered the dog, you would have bigger problems than animals hissing. leave them alone, they'll work it out eventually.

heh, that's what cats do at dogs. If both pets are generally well tempered, they might get along eventually, especially if you encourage them to do so...
