If you are a "legal US immigrant" then you are not yet a US citizen, right? Until you have US citizenship, your travel to Canada is governed by the agreements between Canada and your own country. If natives of your country need visas to visit Canada, so do you despite your Green Card.

No, at this point, you can go to Canada and back with just a drivers license and birth certificate. However, as of January 1, 2007, you will need to have a passport to return to the USA when entering via any transit system such as bus, plane or ship. However, you will be able to go back and forth via private car with just a drivers license and birth certificate until January 2008. This may change, as they keep changing the dates, but at this point, this is the law. It is actually the US who is pushing these changes, rather than Canada.

If you possess an American passport you do not need a visa to travel through Canada...vice versa too.
