just want to know. Like, why you wouldn't ever believe, or why you once did and turned away, or why you just hate the whole thing.

alright so far this question has been quite amusing. I bet you all would never guess how much I love and beleive in Jesus Christ as the savior of the world. I ask this question because I want to know what turns people away. Save the shame on "you's". I think as christians we need to be a little more open to criticism and pull the plank out of our own eyes before we atempt to take the speck out of anothers....please continue to respond.

I think that many people both Christian and non-Christian are turned off by people who come on strong with a holier than thou attitude and try to cram their religious believes down the other person's throat. When I was an Atheist I used to just hate these people. Now that I am a Christian I still get upset with them, but because I have to love them I try to be kind.

So all in all, it is the method that some people use that pushes people away. And an unbeliever will think that all Christians are like that and not want anything to do with it at all.

The other thing that makes people turn away is that some branches of the Christian religion have very dogmatic and ridged ideas that make no common sense. And intelligent people see this as stupid and turn away.

If any Atheists or Agnostics are reading this, I just want you to know that there are many branches of the Christian religion and you will find that some of them expect and encourage you to use your mind. They even believe in God creating the world through the process of evolution. So please don't judge the religion by a few of it's followers. If you want to see what Christianity really is about just read the Gospel accounts of the type of person Jesus was. That is what we Christians are to be like and none of us are quite there yet.

Why wouldn't we ever believe what? I was once an agnostic but after I got married and had my son I began to realize that no matter how happy I am with my earthly life I'd always have a hole in my life where God wasn't in it. I always know what the Bible stood for and I went to church all my childhood and know about Jesus.

It just took me the fact the I don't want to be the reason my family isn't all together in Heaven. Sure it meant giving up things that I thought was fun or that I needed them like partying and drinking and doing what I wanted when I wanted. But it was jsut b/c I felt like I needed it to be fullfilled.

I don't want my son asking where I am just b/c I wanted to make fun of the people handing out bibles or dressing humbly. I don't want to be the reason anyone I love goes to hell all b/c I didn't want to stop it.

The people who think Christians are crap are the ones who know they're doing wrong and don't want to change or they've had too many chances to repent and never took them and God hardened their hearts to where even if the wanted to they couldn't accept him now. There are a bunc of people out there who claim to be Christian and yet never act like it or talk like it. Actions alone won't buy you a ticket into Heaven.

Some people think that Christians are crap because Christian behavior all-too-often does not reflect godliness. The vast majority of Christians I know make Jesus Lord in name only. If they were honest, they would say, "I've made Jesus my Santa Claus and my wishing well, but I'm still in charge of me!" They have not come to the realization that "He who seeks to gain his life will lose it, but he who loses his life for my sake will find it." Modern Christianity is Christianity turned backwards. It's all about "What did God do for you today?"

The gospel is simple, it goes like this - give up and make Jesus Lord because being lord of your own life doesn't work for you or your neighbor.

Each person who feels that way has his own reason. But don't get a persecution complex, most people in the western world are christian, and don't consider christians crap.

That said, consider the following common reasons people find christians tedious boors. 1) Their motivation to be good is to be rewarded in the afterlife. They are not motivated to be good for the sake of being good alone. 2) Many christians are not "Christ-like," and espouse beliefs that are antithetical to Christ's teachings. 3) Many christians spend more time protesting against things than working in favor of things or seeking common ground. For instance, many christians waste time and energy opposing abortions, but few adopt children, volunteer in orphanages, or house and feed women with unplanned pregnancies. Most people who don't want to outlaw abortion also do not consider abortion a great thing. So why don't christians try to promote birth control to prevent unplanned pregnancies in the first place? 4) Christians are often pushy, covering their cars with ludicrous bumper stickers, trying to convert everyone they meet, etc. Christian missionaries by and large are not simply and selflessly helping the poor people in third world countries: they are trying to convert them to their particular brand of religion. 5) They get involved in politics and often lobby for positions that are antithetical to our constitutions. Yet they insist on being tax exempt institutions. Religious institutions should stay out of government affairs.

There is no aspect of living where human personality is not displayed..politics, science...same for religion. As we have sincere christians that practice what they preach, so also we have FAKES...Remeber there cannot be a fake, if there is no original.....

What people don't understand is that Christianity is not a set of rules and ordinances...it's a way of life...Christ-ian: Christ-like...So it takes personal convinction to believe and live the life..even in the face of CRAP CHRISTIANS

I absolutely do not think christians are what you defined them in the question. I just do not hold the same belief they do and do not appreciate when they come up to me with empty threats of hell ,I find it very disrespectful . They believe to be the only path to spiritual enlightment and so many great men in history have prove that wrong, for instance Ghandi , his phylosophy and teachings about nonviolence and peace impress me much more than Christianity when all troughout history it has tried to force their faith with hostily and wars.

You know some people thinks that Christians are bad, but the truth of this is, satan only wants to deceive people so that Christians may not share to the people the goodness of Christ Jesus. I truelly say it unto you that Christians are not crap Because our God is not like that.

Back when I was a christian, christians were taught that they had to do good works to prove their love for christ. Now they all think they are saved by grace, not works, and don't do a damn thing top help anybody but themselves. You can say hate the sin, love the sinner all you want, but we do not have to abide by it

The biggest reason, from my atheist point of view, is hate.

Plain and simple. It's narrow minded, feeble brained, racist, bigoted as**oles who think their sh*t doesn't stink.

Christianity is right for Christians. Don't like it, too bad. Leave them alone and let them believe what they want.

Just to clarify, the above rant is NOT directed at the questioner...just answering the question.
