I have a 5 year old female registered Himylayan female and people would like the kittens. She has never been bred and I need to find a male for her.

As a purebred cat breeder with a CFA registered cattery I have to tell you that 5 years is too old to breed a female for the first time. It is not safe for a cat to be bred her fist time at that age, when having kittens at a younger age the hip bones are more flexible and "stretch" to allow the passage of the kittens, in older cats there is no room for flexibility and it is very possible to have kittens become lodged in the birth canal and both mom and kittens can die. The only way to save mom is an emergency c-section and still it is possible to lose all the kittens.

As far as finding a male for her most reputable breeders maintain "closed" breeding programs and do not allow their males to be used as studs for any cats that do not live in their catteries. There are too many diseases that an outside cat can bring in including the minor upper respiratory infection that can be devastating to a breeder with a cattery. I have 11 cats in my cattery and recently had a litter of kittens with URI that cost me well over $200 to treat including antibiotics, vet visits, quarantining mom and kittens, and disinfecting daily.

If you are truly interested in breeding cats you should speak to some reputable breeders in your area and get some help. Most will be more than happy to educate you on the proper way to breed and the reasons behind breeding cats. You can visit www.breedlist.com for a list of cat breeds and breeders that are in your area.

Breeding purebred cats is not something to take lightly and there are much better reasons than just people would like the kittens. The reason for breeding is to maintain the breed and to improve the quality of the current cats in the breed. There are standards for every breed which breeders adhere to. Please educate yourself.

Please don't breed your cat. A million animals are put down every year in the US alone. There's no need to create more. Those people, if they truly want a cat, will adopt a pet from a shelter and save a life.

Unless you are willing to put a lot of time and money into becoming a well educated breeder, please re-think this. 4-5 millions animals are put to sleep every year in America. There just arent enough homes.
