i really like the "Positive Discipline" series of books by jane Nelsen. i also second the "Easy to love..." recommendation above.

I was a single mom for 6 years, my DD is now 10. "Raising Your Spirited Child" is the book the kept me sane through the toddler/preschool years.

I don't know, Mozz. I stay with my kids, but it's driving me crazy. I'm lucky that my husband makes enough money that I don't have to collect benefits. Honestly, I can't afford to work. Daycare would cost more than this teacher can cover. I do know that the single mom thing sucks. I'm not a real single mom, but I play one when my husband deploys. Since you insisted that we take a position, I say that welfare is better. Kids are only home from school for 5 years, then you can go make the money again. That's what welfare is for. It helps you while you're in need, then you go back to work and pay it back. EDIT: Here comes the "SAHMs sit on their butts and do nothing" crowd! Anyone who says that has never stayed at home with kids. I've done both. I was a working mom and now I'm a SAHM. They're both hard.

I too am a single mother and have found that the main source of my issues with my now 14 year old son was me. I didn't come from a very constructive home and I repeated the cycle. I had to do a lot of inner work because I couldn't very well demand change without giving him an example to follow. What I did was seek out materials that helped me deal with my past and even took a parenting class. My state of mind also helps me deal with him as well. Sometimes it's just a matter of knowing when to pick my fights and when to run for cover. lol I have to also tell myself that it's only temporary, stay consistant, it'll pass and get better. If your daughter is a teen, there's a really great book called "Yes, your teenager is crazy", that helped me understand the adolescent process. Hope that helps...Good luck! : )

There are quite a few. Go to 1/2 Price Books, or you could also get "How to Make Your Child Mind Without Losing Yours". My preacher told me about the book and as soon as I can, I'm buying it...he said it's a great read and very helpful.

I'm not sure what you mean my "strong-willed" but I can imagine. Try reading "Easy to Love, Difficult to Discipline-The 7 Basic Skills for turning Conflict into Cooperation" by Becky A. Bailey, Ph.D. It starts out as dry reading but it gets better and most importantly.....it works! I practice these skills in my preschool classroom with much success. Good luck!
