It's a new one on Me.....besides,"Robot" as a word has only been around since a Czech SciFi writer,Karel Čapek came up with it in the 20's (?)-It's derived from the word for Work,Robota,so it's been around in that form for a long time (centuries!)

Of course it isn't an old English expression!!

Perhaps if you tell us where you found the phrase, we might be able to figure out what it's really about..?!!

I don't think it's Old English.The word 'robot' was created by Karel Capek to designate artificially created mechanical workmen that appeared in his play"R.U.R" in 1921.He attributed it to his brother,Josef.
