Each is the name of a person, and so is left. Each took 1 and left took 11

They were not riding by the tree at the same time. Another apple grew on the tree so that by the time another horseman came along there were twelve apples again and they picked one.

They only picked one apple and shared it around...or Each is the name of one of the horses. Each ( the horse } ate one apple so there was eleven left.
