Buying a great dane is a very big responsbility. They are fantastic dogs with awesome personalities, but they are big and need room to run or be walked frequently as most dogs do. Be prepared for the fact that the average life span of a Great Dane is only 6-8 years because of their size. I have 3 (live on a farm) and adore them all. They are great with kids and are very loyal. Good luck!

Around the 8 month to a year age range they go through a testy phase. This is when they try to test boundaries in rules and see what the rankings are in the pack. I urge you not to be surprised when they get grouchy and cranky. Puppies are cute, but you must stay firm and show them who is boss. I like to say the same phrase to them when they do something bad. I use "did you do that?" and I point at what they did wrong. If they look away I quickly get their attention and know that they see what they did wrong. After that they will normally submit to you if they know that you are scolding them. Don't forget to always give them hugs and kisses about 30 minutes later to show them that you still care and love them no matter what. But whatever you do- do not say sorry. It is hard to scold a cute puppy and not feel guilty but you need to set them up for success by showing them that it was only their fault and they are responsible. My Dane is my best bud ever! Almost 11 months now. Once the phase passes then levels of dominance and boundaries should be set firmly in their head. Hope this helps!

I highly recommend looking into a rescue instead of buying a breeder pup! I know, I probably sound like one of those pushy anti-breeders but there are so many benefits! We have gone through both routes and Id say rescuing is hands down the way to go! We just got a 5 month old baby and her rescue spayed, microchipped, cured her of distemper, hook worms, heart worms and parvo, had a full background of her parents and knew what kind of personality she had and the best part- sh was only $350! Can't find a quality, completely vetted pup for that price! Just Google search your location with "Great Dane rescue"

Hi there

We are in the midst of rehoming our Dane (3yo brindle *****)...gorgeous dog...gorgeous temperament, but since we had our baby (2.5yrs ago) we have not been able to give her as many trips to the dog park and have not had the time to play with her etc...

Dane's are lovely lovely dogs...we will miss her dearly. If you are interested in our dog...we live in the Bris area and are happy to sell her for only $50 and will give you her kennel and dog bed. Pretty easy to look after them, they are affectionate, like to spend indoor time with you at night, great watch-dogs, don't need heaps of exercise (they are funnily enough termed as "apartment dogs").

Let me know if you want extra info :) cath_costanzo72@hotmail.com.

Cheers
Cath
