I researched ALL BREEDS of dogs, when my dtrs were 1 & 3 yrs old---top 3 were...1) Great Pyrenees 2) golden Retriever 3) labrador retriever.....goldens are very good with children...labs are also, yet labs dont realize how big they are, and can knock kids over very easily...Great Pyrenees are sheepdogs, so they protect the flock, including all residents of the home.....they are large, but very gentle, and the kids can tug on them & play with them, and they wont nip or bite...they will literally give their life, to protect the family against an intruder, yet are calm and peacefull otherwise !! we chose the Great Pyrenees and our dog "coconut" was the greatest dog ever !!! go to petfinder.com.....this is a site for rescue groups.....just enter your Zip code, and be AMAZED at how many great choices you have !!....look up the different breeds that interest you, and ask the rescue groups all your questions !!...they will be honest with you, because they want to make good placements, that work out for everyone involved !!.....i recently adopted a Great Pyrenees mix, which is smaller, and my dog Sylvester is awesome !!.....check it out.....try it.....do a good deed.....adopt a Great Pyrenees, golden retriever, or labrador retriever today !!!.....good luck to you, in your search for the IDEAL dog for your 4 yr old child !!!!.....most adoptions run between $ 50 to $ 200 maximum, for a wonderfull dog, that will be very happy to be your new pet !!!

NEVER a small dog!! Small dogs are nervous by nature and children can make that worse and cause them to bite thinking they will get hurt. Larger breeds are better for family dogs with children. Labs and Goldens are the BEST for kids!! Very tolerant and loving.

My family raises boxer and all the dogs we've ever owned have been absolutly great kids dogs. Mind you I have a 4 year old baby cousin and a 7 year old little brother. They are energetic and very patient in my experience although they are somewhat difficult to train. My little brother did how ever just get mauled by a border collie. 26 stitches to the face and he was just petting it. From what know try to get a dog thats playful but not OVERLY energetic for a kid that little.

Labrador Retrievers are known for being great with children but can sometimes be high energy. A full size Lab can easily knock over a small child while playing. Other than that, they are great family dogs.

I have had Great Danes for most of my life and now own 3. They are fantastic dogs with loving personalities and are very laid back. They are smart and easy to train but they are big. Labs are also great family dogs. I would definitely suggest getting a puppy so the dog grows up with the child around. Any breed of dog is great in my opinion as long as they are raised properly. Good Luck!

I have had alot of different dogs in my life & was in the same position when i wanted to get a dog for my 2yo son at the time to grow up with. I done alot of reading & found that satffys are one of the best dogs for kids. My son is now 5 and has 2 staffys who adore him & would do what ever they could to protect him.
They are very loyal and great with children.
I have not spoken to one owner yet who has said any different.
I have no problem trusting them with a child.
If you get it from a pup your son and his dog will have a very strong bond and the dog will adore him.

golden retrievers and labs are amazing w/ children plus they are very obedient and are very willing to please you
and going with a smaller dog isnt usually a good idea because while the child is learning how to behave around animals they dont always understand that they can't play rough with the dog and smaller dogs tend to get upset easier when a small child is pulling and pushing and squeezing on a dog

I had a golden retriever all through my childhood.
While they are big, they are also extreamly non-agressive.
Your son/daughter's size ratio to the dog may at first appear worry-some but you will have to remember that (un) fortunantly, they won't always be little forever.

PUG!! I own a pug, pugs are very good natured dogs. I used to have a roommate that had a three year old. He loved to play, he liked to kick at my dog, and basically treat the dog like a small child would treat them. He never once bit him, he did accidentally scratch him while they were playing, but that's going to happen unless their miraculously born w/out nails. PUGs have strong muscular bodies, and trust me the harder you rub their backs the more they like it. And their very hyper, and love to play! Their small dogs so you wont spend a lot on FOOD like you would a larger dog. They do snort a lot and snore but you get used to it. Their very lovable.
