My son switched from Zoloft to Lexapro about two weeks ago - he seems to be getting more depressed. He was actually taking Zoloft to settle him down for ADHD - of course, no ADHD meds work so sometimes I wonder if he has something else. He is very hyper, but anyone have same experience with Lexapro - becoming depressed?

That's normal for the first 2 weeks or so. If it gets bad, take him to the doctor- there are problems with kids becoming suicidal during the first couple of weeks. Just keep your eyes open, and it should get better soon.
Lexapro worked pretty well for me, but I did go through that stage at the beginning.

Zoloft and Lexapro are similar medications, as they are both SSRI's. I have a friend who is ADHD and he's on Aderrall XR and Zoloft and they work just fine.

I do know that SSRI's are known to trigger depression in cases of bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder. There are some common symptoms between ADHD and Bipolar Disorder.

I was diagnosed with BP II this year. Last year a Dr. I saw thought it was major depression and put me on Lexapro and I went into an even deeper depression.

Your son needs to be monitored by a Psychiatrist at least weekly to get a firm diagnosis and the proper meds/dosage correct.

I hope he feels better.

I use to take Lexapro for panic assaults and it labored pleasant. The most effective rationale I do not take it now's considering that it brought about a manic episode (I'm bipolar). There is a risk that Lexapro will be just right for you too. It might take four to eight weeks to believe the entire final result so supply it time and if there is not any benefit after approximately two months without doubt permit the health care provider realize. For me the panic assaults acquired worse earlier than they acquired greater so do not be startled by way of that. I want you the pleasant...

Lexapro worked well for me, but had unwanted side effects (mainly sexual.) However, I'm 30. My 21 year old sister went on it and had a similar problem.
It is possible for an anti-depressant to increase depression because everyone's body chemistry is different and sometimes medications have the opposite effect that they are meant to have.

As for children being on anti-depressants...it is not that they should never be on them. They should just be watched very carefully. Antidepressants, in studies, have been shown to increase suicidal thought and behaviors in kids (from 2% - general population of children to 4% kids on anti-d's.) but they have not been shown to increase the actual incidence of suicide. In fact, since they have started prescribing them more to children, the suicide rate in that population has gone down.

I would definitely talk to your son's doctor about your concerns. It may be Lexapro is simply not the right medication for him.

Kids aren't supposed to take antidepressants cause they cause them to be suicidal. Try Abilify. It is different and I bet it will work. I bet he is a bi-polar kid. They are often misdiagnosed as adhd. I took Lexapro and so did a friend of mine. As adults we both had EXTREMELY satifying results from this medication. It is however, a SRI, and should not be administered to anybody under the age of about 20 or so.

My relative use to be on it and when I read many of the websites about what people experience (and they were happening to her) she got off them when she learned what was going on.

I would never reccomend that........esp. for a child. Go to some message boards or forums and read about side effects first hand. You might also check www.rxlist.com or lexapro message boards .

It's hard to get off all of these type drugs and they just keep causing trouble.... I know it's hard for the child and for you. People need to do a lot of reading and research. Some side effects can be temporary and others lead to other problems long term.

I tried Lexapro. It was terrible. It didn't do anything for me except make me extremely irritable.

It needs to work in tandem with something. Concerta didn't help at all?
