I need to know how much money you would spend on clothing when raising a child from as soon as the sprem and egg unite until the child is 1 year old.

Our daughter is 10 months old. All told we've spent maybe $200 to date This includes a medium weight fall/spring jacket, that will fit her for a long while, for about $15 new, and a high-quality winter snowsuit, that should fit her into next winter, for about $60, new.

We've been given a lot of clothes, most of which she has never worn. Most of the clothing that we've bought her we've bought from a thrift store. There are several reasons for this...
1) during the first years especially, children grow so quickly that it would be a waste (as we see it) to spend a ton of money on clothes that she's just going to outgrow in a week or two...
2) with the way that we want to dress her, finding clothes new is very difficult. We want to dress our daughter like a child, not a little adult. It seems to us that most new clothing these days is geared towards imitating adult fashion instead of letting kids be kids. Shopping in the thrift store gives us much more of a choice range than retail stores.
3) most importantly to me is the fact that it is nearly impossible to go into your average store these days and find clothing that is modest and feminine. We don't want her wearing anything flashy, tacky or otherwise objectionable. (I will not apologize for not wanting my daughter to wear clothing with sequins or writing across the tush!) We have a set value structure (wholesome) that we want to raise our children with and the current retail clothing options just don't support those values.

With what we believe and the frugality that we practice, I can't see spending more than this on future children. In fact, since we already have as much clothing as we do, I could definitely see spending a lot less for future children.

I'm about to give birth to my first, and am trying to spend as little as possible. I get a lot of things second hand. Babies grow so fast even though the clothes are "used" they still look brand new.

I also have programs at my base (we're Air Force) that provide me with free second hand baby clothes.

If you're buying retail, you can spend SOOO much money. Esp if you're one of those mom's who only buys designer. I recommend second hand resale shops. I've gone in some where people are selling baby clothes with $20-30 price tags still on them for $2-3 an outfit.

As little as possible. I didn't even buy maternity clothes. I bought 2X shirts because I looked like I swallowed a basketball and all the shirts made me look even bigger than I was. I went to retail shops for all the baby clothes because when you have a 9lb 9oz baby they grow fast. He still likes to go to the retail shops for clothes even though he is 16 and 6'5" tall now. I also have twin 7 month old grand babies and i have never bought them a new outfit they grow to fast for that.

I bought a lot of clothes, and now I won't buy any until he hits the size. i made a mistake with my son, but not with my daughter. My son had plenty of clothes, but he couldn't fit any of them. I spent about 2,000 starting the collection and wasted all of it, and gave it to my nephew, because my son grew so quick. I don't have to worry about my daughter though, I will only buy things from 9 to 12 months now. She is 7 going on 8 months.

When I had my son we were young and broke- so I didnt spend nearly as much as I did when he was a preschooler... it can get out of control- keeping up with the Jones'. Now, he has a voice and says what he likes and doesnt like- he is very simple and isnt into fads. So, its gotten cheaper to clothe him. And I have gotten smarter. ;)

I'd say you could realistically spend $300-400 in one year if you shopped smart.

As much as I could afford at the time. I'm not a 'clothes' person anyway, there are way more important things to spend money on.

The baby doesn't wear the clothes out he just outgrows them at this age!
So shop for used clothes, look for garage sales, thrift stores, discount stores, the clothes won't be that expensive.

Its the diapers that will eat you up!

Well, I wouldn't be buying expensive name brand clothes--they grow out of them WAY too fast during this stage. I'd spend as much as I need to, but I wouldn't spend it frivolously.
