We recently had to take our 2 years old male cat to the vet for major surgery as the idiot had somehow ingested 3 metres of cotton and it had to be removed. Everything was fine with surgery and he is now recuperating at home however our 12 month female who previously adored him has avoided him since we brought him home and hisses and runs away whenever she sees him. We thought it was the vet smell but the antiseptic smell has worn off rapidly. I would understand it being a territorial issue but she's a girl and he was only in the vets for 24 hours!!

She probably still smells the "vet" smell. Her nose is much more efficiant than a humans. Also, your other cat has a sutured wound and I would assume a big shaved spot. She is frightened of all the changes in her friend. Time will resolve this. Be patient with her.

its probally cause at the vets there are many animals that come and go and even tho they clean the cages really good cats have a keen sense of smell. and think of all the people that have touched him and all the animals they have touched before they touched him. my cat was up on a motor and the fan blade hurt her bad she had to be at the vets for a WEEK. that about killed me. well when she came back i noticed the other cats didnt want a thing to do with her so i took a blanket that they all had been laying on and had her lay on it and then i rubbed it on the other cats and then put it back where they were used to it, after a few days they got used to her again and they are back to loving her again just give it time im sure all will be well.

As soon as he is well enough, bath both cats. This will neutralize all the smells and they will each have to get used to the clean cat smell. Even though you can't smell antiseptic, etc. cats on the other hand can smell the most minute traces. Off to the tub with them and peace will reign once again!

Cats don't like the vet. She probably can still smell it on him since cats have a very keen sense of smell. Just wait a little wile, if she's still like that, try to teach her that's the way she's acting isn't acceptable.

You didn't say HOW LONG it's been since you brought him back home??? Animals sense of smell is so much better than our's I suspect she is still smelling the vet on him...even tho you don't. I wouldn't worry about it they will work it out before long.

She can still smell the vet's office even if you can't.
Give it time to wear off, and for heaven's sake DO NOT spray any type of deodorant or chemical on an animal unless prescribed/recommended by your vet.

That is very common in animals. If they sense another animal is injured, they usually will stay away. Cats are very proud and independant animals and will even try to find someplace away from everyone when it's their time to pass. This is the reason other cats will avoid them even if just injured. Give her time, once he's starts healing more and she sense he's okay, she'll come back around. Just don't try to force her.

I get the same reaction whenever I take one of my cats to the groomer. Sophie doesn't "recognize" her after her bath, so there are a few days of smelling and hissing.

She knows he left and he still smells odd to her. And who knows what they say to each other when you aren't around? He could be telling her that she is next to go to the vet! hahaha. Give it time, they will probably work it out.
