In Washington State all kids have to pass the WASL (Washington Assessment of Student Learning). This website Will give you an idea of the kind of math problems WA state 3rd graders have to do: http://www.pasd.wednet.edu/school/mathWASL/
My children both learned "Everyday Math" sometimes called Chicago Math. It is strange to those of us who learned math in the 70's, but both my children did great with it (my 10th grade son is in FST and 7th grade daughter is in Algebra I). Here is the site to check out what they were learning as third graders: http://everydaymath.uchicago.edu/

When my 13 yr. old was in the 3rd grade, she was learning multiplication and division. She had trouble too and we had to work extra hard for her to get it. She's in the 8th grade now and gets really good grades in Math. Which is good because the stuff she is learning now, I never was required to learn...even in high school. I have a 5 year old and I am starting to wonder if they will be teaching her algebra by the time she reaches the third grade.

I wasn't in third grade too long ago [I'm 13] and I remember pretty distinctly doing some two digit multiplications and the begininings of long division. I remember not understanding long division at all until fourth grade, and I've been fine ever since, even though my teacher thought that I wasn't good at math.

Adding,Subtracting,Divison,Multiplication and Geometry. She is doing very well. She probably just needs a little extra practice. It really just depends on the child , some are great at math and others need a little extra help.

I wish I could help but my son is in gifted in talented. But I believe the regular classes in 3rd grade did division, multiplication. I am having problem with my son now he is in 4th grade. He feels he is being punished for being intelligent. So I know how you feel about asking too much of them. They spend little or no time on one thing and move to next thing. He comes home with about 5 to 6 pages of homework. Rediculious if you ask me.

She was doing simple geometry shapes and measurements last week and continues to do addition and subtraction with 3 numbers (524-234=).
Keep in mind that it's still the beginning of the year (sort of) and each marking period will be something new.

Does he have the different complications in different parts, which incorporates interpreting? I have gentle dyslexia or perhaps as it by no potential manifested itself with words, i'm consistently switching numbers round in my head. operating example, if that is 4:30, i'd study it as 3:40. That brought about a good number of complications in my math instructions. you may evaluate getting him examined for something like that. What worked for me replaced into utilizing M&Ms. i might want to visualize the numbers that way, and did not ought to rigidity about getting them backwards. Repeating the equations out loud even as including and subtracting from the piles of M&Ms helped me memorize them. operating example, i might want to have a pile of ten M&Ms, and my mom (or whoever) might want to take 5 away. i might want to honestly SEE the maths in progression, and as I counted the most suitable M&Ms i might want to assert "ten minus 5 is 5." and that i might want to get to eat them M&Ms even as i replaced into done, so I loved practice. :) On checks and different sheets, i might want to apply tick marks to do similar seen representations (i.e. draw ten tick marks, upload 2 extra, that equals twelve). some instructors/faculties favor little ones to immediately up memorize the equations, which i in my opinion imagine is stupid, so communicate over consisting of his instructor to make sure if she'd enable him a piece of scratch paper to artwork it out visually.
