I think that he probably appreciates that fact that you did visit him, it can be very lonely in the hospital. I am sure he is upset about his son not visiting him, but I believe you helped him through that by being there. Maybe you could give him a ride home if he needs that , he may not need as much as you may think. Let your mother in law know that you are there for them if she needs you, right now I think that alone will be very helpful too your in laws. As sometimes just knowing someone cares can be more help that we realize.

HI, the best thing for you to do at this time ,is just be nice and always ask him ,are you comfortable can i get you something.
the best one is, what do you feel like eating today ,and get it for him,, he will just love that,, as for me , i have lost both my mother in law and father in law that i love dearly,,
i lost my mother in law first ,,then i took care of my father in law up to the day that he pass away, don't worry about his other son or daughters ,, my husband had 8 other brothers and sisters that never did anything at all much less went to the hospital to see him,, i was the one that gave him baths and make sure that his pampers where clean ,, fed him even when he was hospitalized ,
its hard when small children are involved because at times you cant do all the things that you want too.but you just do what you can,, believe me i know ,, its not what you do its how you do it ..
don't worry everything will work out well for you ,,
good luck

Hi
It is refreshing to see someone caring so much as you do. Offer to do some specifics on a schedule such as reading to him, running some errands, or helping around the house. May I also suggest picking up a diabetic cook book (free at any clinic or hospital) and making a dish or two. Simply talking to him can make all the difference in the world.

If you want to make a food entree there are many diabetic recipes online.
You should also support your mother in law. If she is less stressed out she will be there for your father in law.

BUY A DIABETIC COOK BOOK AND COOK SOME ENTREES AND FREEZE THEM, THAT WILL HELP YOUR MOTHER IN LAW.MAYBE OFFER TO CLEAN THE HOUSE FOR HER OR SOMETHING AND THEN SEND HIS SON THAT HASNT BEEN THERE A CARD TELLING HIM OF HIS DADS PROGRESS AND HOW HE WAS DOING WHILE HE WAS IN THE HOSPITAL.WRITE A NOTE ON THE BOTTOM SAYING JUST THOUGHT YOU WOULD WANT TO KNOW.

Just ask what you can do to help. They may not need your help with anything, but just knowing you are there if needed helps immensely in this situation.

JUST BE THERE FOR BOTH HIM AND HIS WIFE. HELP HER OUT IF SHE'S THE ONLY ONE TAKING CARE OF HIM.
