Shirk is when a person associates God with others, which means you don't truly believe only He has power over all things. E.g. black magic, believing in other gods
Bid'ah is a very controversial issue, and some people say it is when a person does something which was not practiced by Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).
The Sharee'ah definition of Bid'ah is: "A newly invented way [beliefs or action] in the religion, in imitation of the Sharee'ah (prescribed Law), by which nearness to Allaah is sought, [but] not being supported by any authentic proof - neither in its foundations, nor in the manner in which it is performed."
In some cultures people read the Yasin at a person's funeral, this was not done by the Prophet (pbuh) himself but I don't think this is wrong at all. Yet some people would say this is bida'h.
To me bid'ah is when you invent something that is known to be wrong in Islam.. such as hurting oneself to show one's iman in Allah. Hurting oneself as an act of worship is clearly wrong as Allah does state in the Qur'an people shoud not 'mutilate' their bodies. To me that is bid'ah. Sorry if I have offended anyone but it's my opinion.

Every muslim is supposed to know about shirk so they don't commit it. Shirk is to think of anyone else as god exept for the real GOD. if some one does not believe that there is only one God it means he is commiting the sin of shirk. there are trhree kinds of major shirk.
1.Shirk in worship like if we worship anyone else except god as the christians worship jesus and the cross. islam the bigggest sin is shirk.
2. Shirk in the unique attributes of allah like as we all know that some attributes only suit on God almighty as we say that he is the giver of food and protection so if we say that someone else is the giver of these things this would also be a shirk and remember allah not only has these two unique attributes he has many which may number in thousand or maybe in hundreds.
3.Shirk in the God's oneness like if we say that there is not one but more than one gods than even that is a shirk.
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him ) once said:
" Shirk is the greatest sin of all"
that saying of Prophet (p.b.u.h) tells us that sin is the most terrible sin and we must stay away from it.
Allah in Quran tells us that he might forgive anything which he pleases but he is never going to forgive us for commiting shirk anyway.
Today almost all the people who believe in God commit the biggest sins of all called shirk except for the muslims' Muslims do not commit shirk. But the christians do by worshipping jesus and the buddhists do by worshipping buddha.

shirk is associating partners with God (polytheism).
bid'ah is inventing or adding stuff to the practice of the religion.
