Great, she's a normal social kid!
As a Mum of 7, I can assure you that this method will be affective. More time intensive than chemicals though. Every night for a week, condition her hair (nice, heavy conditioner) and use a lice comb to remove the lice. The conditioner also makes it easier to remove the eggs which adhere to the hairshaft. The missed eggs (nits) will continue to hatch daily for a week, hence doing it nightly. Thereafter, you only need to do it if she has been in contact with people/children who have head-lice. The nits (eggs) are only viable, and therefore able to hatch if they are attached to the hair shaft (about 1/2 inch from the scalp). Eggs on lose hairs (pillows, bedding, hats) will die within a few hours if not in contact with a scalp. Dont bother wasting a fortune of all types of poisons to treat bedding etc. In future, keep her hair gelled and up. And heres a tip for adults: head-lice hate dyed hair!

Ok...first..I am sorry! These can be the worst to get rid of. My kids actually had a variety that was immune to the Rid and Nix preparations!
If she has just gotten them, I would go ahead and treat with Rid or Nix; be careful to follow the exact package directions. Even doing that, though, your very best defense is DAILY inspections & combing. The lice lay eggs that adhere tightly to hair strand close to the scalp. The Lice shampoo will only kill the live bugs; not the eggs. You have to re-treat in 5-7 days to kill the hatching babies. The comb in the kit doesn't work nearly as well as the metal comb you can buy separately. There is also an electric comb that is very efficient but it's about $25. It zaps or stuns the bug. If your daughter has really long hair, you may find it easier on her to pinch the strand of hair between your use your fingernails to pull/slide the egg off the hair shaft. It usually pulls less than the comb on long hair. Good Luck!!

For a natural head lice remedy
Saturate hair completely with thick coat of Kraft Mayo, working into hair and roots well. Wrap hair with Saran Wrap or shower cap . Let set two hours. Shampoo hair thoroughly. The olive oil in the mayonnaise kills the lice and nits. Rinse hair with white vinegar. Then rinse well with water. Comb hair with nit comb.
Repeat one week later.
Clean all sheets and bedding in hot or warm water. Vacuum floors and all furniture. Place combs and brushes in boiled water which has been allowed to cool for -5-7 minutes. Any stuffed animals place in garbage bag and seal for two weeks.
There is hope that this will soon be a problem of the past. There is a new invention which can kill head lice using heat. Lice can't stand desert like conditions of the scalp. It heats the head close to the scalp and the lice and knits die. It is designed to be used by nurses at schools-so that kids will not have to be sent home and their parents not inconvenienced.

Okay, sorry she got lice, but I think most kids get it at one point or another, so don't feel bad. First, buy one of the shampoos you can get at the drugstore, Rid, or Nix. Then buy a separate lice comb; the plastic ones don't work very well unless she has very coarse hair. You have to rid her and your home of lice in three steps:
1. Kill the live lice with the shampoo. This will only kill the live lice. They have already laid eggs (nits) in her hair, close to the scalp, near the neck and ears where it's warmest.
2. Get RID of the nits. You can use the comb to get them out, or go through her hair in tiny sections, pulling them out with your fingernails. This is the worst part, but they will hatch and reinfest if you don't. The nits are glued in, so you must use a comb, or your fingernail, or some other scraping surface to get them loose and out of the hair. Have a grocery bag or something similar to put them in, so they don't get in your carpet or couch.
3. Now you must clean everything in your house where the lice might live; they can survive off a human head for about two days. So wash all of her sheets and clothes in the hottest water you can get away with, vacuum your couches and carpets, and put any stuffed animals in plastic bags and tightly seal for at least a week.
Now, have your husband check your head for lice, and check his head, too. Should either of you have any signs, use the shampoo on yourselves and remove any nits; you may want to use the shampoo even if you show no signs of infestation anyway, just as a preventative. And don't feel bad; acquisition of headlice is NOT, contrary to belief, caused by dirty hair. Remind your daughter to never share hats, brushes, combs, etc. with any of her friends from school (or even jackets with hoods).
Headlice is the BIGGEST pain; my poor mom had to deal with it twice for me and my twin sister in grammar school, and once when I picked it up from a movie theater seat as a teenager. She never got it herself, though, because she always had her own hairbrush and kept her long hair up in a bun. Make sure to keep your hair up and contained, too. It will help keep you from getting it, even if your daughter isn't so lucky.

Go to the doctor before you buy anything that is store bought. My little sister had head lice about 3 monthes ago and that Rid that everyone is recommending made her hair fall out. MAKE SURE YOU GET THE DOCTOR TO MAKE A SUGGESTION EVEN IF IT IS JUST A CALL >>> YOUR DAUGHTER MAY HAVE REALLY SENSITIVE SKIN OR AN INABILITY TO REACT CORRECTLY TO THE CHEMICALS IN STORE BOUGHT MEDICATIONS (theres also an presciption drug that does the trick) ... dont use vasaline or warm water by itself, lice like moist warm areas ...

Go to your local drug store and get RID, an over the counter medication used for lice. You will find it on the shampoo isle. Five years old is not too you to have it - she probably got it from one of her school or daycare mates. No biggie, just get the RID and zap 'em.
Also, you need to make sure you wash her bedding with hot soapy water with a bit of bleach, and any clothes she has worn since having the lice in hot soapy water, with bleach if they can be bleached.

There is a tar shampoo just for head lice....stop driving yourself crazy and get it.......it works! You can buy it at your local pharmacy. There is a special comb you can buy too.....use it after you shampoo your dtrs hair and dry it....comb thru her hair and check for the lice.
Of course make sure you wash all of her bed clothes and all of her clothes thoroughly after you have taken care of her lice.
Good luck!
