A/C has to have an a-coil installed above the furnace air handler, so it helps to have the duct already there, but not much. cost about $ 2000 to $3000

I had a quote for a 2800 square foot bilevel (1400ft/floor) at $3,500 (canadian) installed. This included:

compressor
piping
power
modifications to existing natural gas forced air ductwork to install the coil

If you chose to go with a heat pump (air conditions in the summer and heats in the winter), expect to pay $4,000 - $5,000.

Now your house is smaller, so you might see some savings with a smaller compressor.

As to when it's cheaper, look for deals.

I had central air put in on a house with only 1100 sq.ft. It ran me about $2,000.00. We didn't have the duct work in, so maybe it will run you about $500 less. I hope!!

Winter is cheapest of course, it would cost I would guess about $500-$800 for hookup to your ducts plus the cost of the ac unit.
