John the Baptist was a prophet who lived the same time as Jesus. He was actually Jesus's cousin; Mary was kin to John's mother Elizabeth.
John was just a man, no more no less. He was so devout to God, and so radical in his teachings, that he was something of an outsider from the religious leaders. The Bible says John lived out in the woods and ate bugs. All he really cared about was preaching.
He is known as "the Baptist" because he baptised Jesus in water when Jesus began his own ministry. He was the first to recognize Jesus as "the Lamb of God."
John was arrested and sent to prison, and eventually was executed, though he had committed no specific crime. The Bible records that Jesus was quite saddened by John's death.

Actually, I do believe he was given sainthood. Still, he is mostly known for the baptism of Jesus when the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus. Also, John the Baptist was called upon to baptize all with water. Thus symbolizing a pact with the Almighty, whilst Jesus offered all a baptism of fire (sometimes referred to as Confirmation) through which all must pass. It's a family thing with the two. One could not work without the words of the other. That's how I understood it.

According to Luke, John the Baptist was the forerunner of Jesus Christ, and son of Zacharias and Elisabeth; his birth, name, and office, were foretold by the angel Gabriel to Zacharias, while Zacharias was performing his functions as a priest in the temple of Jerusalem. According to Luke, Zacharias was a priest of the course of Abijah, and his wife, Elisabeth, was of the Daughters of Aaron Luke 1:5; consequently John automatically held the priesthood of Aaron, which, to the Jews' eyes, gave him authority to baptize in the name of God.

Luke states that John was born about six months before Jesus, and that Zacharias' unbelief over the birth of his son led to him losing his power of speech, which was only restored on the occasion of John's circumcision (Luke 1:64). On the basis of Luke's account, the Catholic calendar placed the feast of John the Baptist on June 24, six months before Christmas.

I know that John the Baptist (pbuh)was a prophet, not a saint. It says so in the bible and in the Qur'an. Mayabe there was someone claiming to be a saint that called himself that. I dunno, I do know that he was a prophet of God.
