Practice good sleep hygiene: go to bed at the same time each night, (and get up at the same time each morning) have orderly sleep rituals that you carry out each night. Set out things you need to take with you the next day, have a carbohydrate-rich snack (toast?), take evening medication, brush your teeth, read for 20 minutes, and whatever else works for you. The idea is to train your mind and body that these activities signal it's almost time to sleep.
Treatment Options:
Milk develops a substance called tryptophan when it's been heated (the same stuff you find in turkey meat) which induces drowsiness. Hot milk works for some. There are herbal remedies available like 'valerian root'. There are others as well, but valerian is the one I hear about the most. Melatonin induces drowsiness and helps my child, who has ADHD, to settle down and fall asleep. Adults should start at 3mg/day. Some people medications like Neo-Citran, but I consider that dangerous. Decongestants and antihistamines can have serious side effects and drug interactions.
You're better off getting something by prescription that has been through rigorous testing over the long term. A mild one is Chloral Hydrate. There are newer ones on the market that do NOT cause addiction. In Canada there's one called zopilcone. It works well, without a hang-over effect. I see other similar drugs advertised on TV that are available in the US.
If your own attempts to remedy the insomnia don't work, see a doctor, because insomnia can lead to a lot of other problems, some of them very serious (i.e. driving drowsy, triggering a mental illness).

My doctor said that a hot bath actually stimulates, rather than relaxes, so avoid that.
I take Nyquil or Tylenol PM. I use the brand names. I find the generic versions are not as good or leave you drowsy the next day.
L-Tryptophan, found in a health store, is a natural enzyme which my doctor reccomends for good sleep patterns. If you can't find that, the drug store has Melatonin. Those 2 can be combined as well. Sweet dreams!

accompany your warm milk with an ounce or two of turkey... not a meal but enough so that the triptophan can kick in... that's all it takes for me... can't stay awake... can't eat turkey for lunch during the week... can't take a nap at work... hey, can't hurt ya and doesn't cost much to try, eh?... even good for you :)
wanting to give you a source on line to back up my suggestion, I found this site where lots of other stuff that might help are mentioned...
wishing you a safe and restful sleep

These things have worked for me: exercise in the morning (even if it's only 20 minutes), lavender oil on my pillow, chamomile tea before bed and listening to my ipod with my eyes closed right before I go to sleep. I used to have the worst insomnia and these all help.

I have this same prob. What usually helps me is listening to soft music. Buy a soft classical CD at Super Walmart, or Targer, or something. They are about $5.
Also, don't think about anything exciting, like your bf, gf, or an upcoming event!
Sweet Dreams! (I hope I helped! :-)
