You need a passport to enter Canada and to return to the USA. But you do not need a visa if you hold a legal green card to the USA.
==================================

From TIMATIC:

National PERU (PE) /Residence U.S.A. (US)
Embarkation U.S.A. (US) /Destination CANADA (CA)

CANADA (CA)

Passport required; or
Permanent Resident/Resident Alien Card (Form I-551), provided
coming directly from:
- U.S.A.; or
- St. Pierre and Miquelon.

Visa not required if holding Permanent Resident/Resident Alien
Card (Form I-551).

It isn't the visiting Canada that could be the problem, it is the getting back into the US. Talk to US immigration officials first, and if they say you are good to go, then talk to Canadian authorities to make sure you can cross the border. I would say you probably are not carrying id to meet current international rules going either way. You will likely need, at the least the passport you used to gain entry into the US in the first place.
