Is it safe to cover my 3 week up with an afghan in her bassinet? I've heard that they can suffocate with blankets but she won't sleep without a blanket. I figured an afghan would be pretty safe because of the holes in it and its one of the only blankets she'll sleep with. Any advice?

Ok, I am puttin my *** out there, cause I know there are people that will freak about this, but whatever. My baby, who will be 5 months old on the 8th of November will NOT go to sleep unless I cover her face with a blanket. I mean right on her face, there is no pocket between the blanket and her, but if I don't do this she screams and cries until she is blue in the face. It's rather odd and not like anything I have ever seen before, I thought maybe she wanted it to be dark so I put her in a dark room, but that didn't work either, I covered her face in the dark and she went right to sleep. I do remove the blanket after she is in a deeper sleep, but My Point is that I really don't see what harm it would to to give her a blanket. Pillows on the other hand are not reccomended until the age of 1 (approx). Hope my weird ramblings helped you a little. LOL

I would probably be less worried about a 3 week old than I would when they get better at moving around. A baby that young can't move that much. All the same, I'd make sure the afghan or blanket was swaddled around her body so it would be less likely to cause a problem, or I'd try one of those body sleep sacks (I'm not sure what they are called).

The problem isn't one you need to get casual about. I went in one time to check on my 8 month old, and he was still as could be...with the blanket wrapped twice around his head! My heart stopped; I just knew he was dead. Turned out he was sleeping fine, but I have no idea how he got the blanket wrapped there or how he was breathing.

It isn't a very safe thing to do since at three weeks old she doesn't have the coordination or strength yet to move the blanket off of her face if it does end up over it. You would be better off either swaddling her, or putting her in a sleep sack that is made for an infant her age. The sleep sack has the advantage of being unable to be kicked off, where as the swaddling will come undone if she wiggles a lot. Here's an example of what a sleep sack looks like, but you can get them from the baby section of most department stores.

Wow, someone has scared you. Blankets are fine, try to use baby blankets because they aren't too big. If an afghan is the only thing she will sleep with, try and make it to as close a size to the baby blankets as possible.

don't stress too much. I was told never ever to let a baby sleep on its stomach because it could cause cot death, and no matter what I tried both my boys slept and still do, on the stomachs.

It is just her way of getting comfortable. If you are worried then check on her every now and then. Isn't it better she sleep then not at all.

Also, if she loves the afghan, then try wrapping her up in it, although bear in mind though, they are like us so some like it and some don't.

I would try swaddling her or getting her a zip up sleeper sack. They are like little sleeping bags with holes for the head and arms to keep them warm but safe from SIDS. The holes in the afghan may not be safe because she can get a finger twisted in there. Personally both my kids have always slept with blankets and stuffed animals in their cribs but my babies were unnaturally strong and could lift and turn their heads at birth and slept with pacifiers which keeps an unobstructed airway. If this is not the case with your baby, I would play it safe with swaddling, a sleeper or a crib quilt tucked in tightly below their chest. Congrats on a new baby.

I did with my son. The only time i didnt have him covered was if he was in his crib to much roll around room and that is when the suffocate comes into play. He refused to sleep unless he was cuddled tight. you can try swaddling him, but if you keep a eye on her you should be ok. not much rolling room in the bassinet.

congrats on the baby and best of luck

to help forestall SIDS (unexpected toddler dying syndrome) abdomen sound asleep isn't recommended. you ought to coach your toddler now to sleep on it particularly is very own. they could no longer understand yet being held, rocked and talked to feels good. that's what they have been dealing with for 9 months interior you. wait and spot, it takes time. attempt a small bassinet next on your mattress. Our first have been given use to the rocking. We located him in a provider that rocked, as quickly as he fell asleep we transferred him to his bassinet. It took a pair of week for the transition yet after that no issues. With our different 2 we did no longer make the comparable mistake and started them off interior the bassinet. while they could cry we could purely make confident they have been swaddled, patted them for a on a similar time as and presented a calming voice or track. stay and learn. good success.

I had an afghan made of a very light thread, and my son always slept very well with it and never had any problems. I probably wouldnt use one with the heavier wool thread.

they have sleep wear for babies that is similar to a blanket, some have full arms, others have no sleeves, and the bottom is like a large bag with a zipper, they are usually refered to as a sleep sac
