So many claim to be the best. But I feed Nutro Natural High Energy. It is a bit on the spendy side. However I am not opposed to trying something new like Eagle or Canadea.
I would not feed grocery store pet foods, or Eukanuba, Iams or Science Diet.

Well some dogs don't do well on the highest quality food. Or maybe she just wasn't doing well on the top quality food you gave her. And most dogs love to eat lower quality food because often it's sprayed with fat or something else that tastes nice to them. If you're on a budget, the best cheapest high quality food is Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul. It's about $1/lb. The next one down is the dog food from Costco (if you have a membership). It's the Kirkland brand food, it's very very decent. Not much fillers and mostly good stuff. It's about $0.50/lb. It's much better than some of the brands out there like Pedigree or Beneful, etc.

I feed my dogs Canidae. It's a well balanced natural food that doesn't contain too many fillers like corn and soy. There are a lot of other great brands like Innova, Innova Evo, Timberwolf Ogranics, DickVan Patten's Natural Balance, and Wellness. It really depends on your dog. What will work for one dog might not work for another. In my opinion you should stay away from any food that contains corn, by-products (of any kind), bha or bht, or menadione sodium bisulfate. Just do your research and learn how to read food labels. But Canidae is a great food that is also well priced.

Nutro or science diet... You are not supposed to buy dog food which the first ingredients include corn meal, b/c dogs cannot digest it well.. which is strange b/c in most dog food (especially the cheap brands) the first ingredient is corn meal.... so check the labels, and yes you will have to spend a little more, but they also eat less of the good stuff, so it should last a little longer.. I am pretty lucky however b/c I have a small mutt (she's like a shi-tzu) so I just have to buy the little bags for about $7-$9 and it last about a month.

I'm using Kibbes and Bits. I get the light food for one of my dogs, and senior food for the other two. I also buy canned pedigree light for one of my dogs that's on senior food. They seem to love it, and it's just as good a food as any other you can buy in stores. It's a high quality food, and the company that makes Kibbles n Bits also makes 9-Lives cat food, Canine Carry-Outs, Cycle, Gravy Train, Jerky Treats, Meaty-Bone, Natures Recipe, Pounce cat food, Pounce Purrfections, Pupperoni, Reward. Skippy, Snausages, and Wagwells. Often, the cheapest brands are just the name-brand foods in a differnt package. For example, Purina also makes Alpo, Aquari-Yums, Beggin Strips, Beneful, Busy Bone, Cat Chow, Ches Eez, Chew-rific, Deli-cat, Dog Chow, Essentials, Fancy Feast, Fit N Trim, Friskies, Hi Pro, Kibbles and Chunks, Kit 'N Kaboodle, Kitten Chow, Mighty Dog, Moist & Meaty, Pro Plan, Puppy Chow, Purina One, Secondnature, Tidy Cats, T Bonz Dog, and Whisker Lickin's. As you can see, those products range from cheap (Kibbles and Chunks - a store brand) to expensive (ProPlan). When you choose a food, choose one that's affordable, your dog likes, and you get results with. Often the formula, such as lamb and rice vs beef, is more important than brand. So, the cheapest can be the best. Some of the most expensive foods are presciption foods, they can get to around $40 for a 15-lb bag. The food I give is about $10 for a 17-lb bag, and I have just as much confidence in it as I do in the prescription brands.
just wanted to add--Ol' Roy is actually a good-quality food, despite the very low price. I used to feed the light food to all the dogs, but when I started the Kibbles n Bits senior food (couldn't find senior Ol' Roy except in tiny bags) I decided to go ahead and switch to Kibbles 'n Bits light. The canned Ol' Roy look suspiciously like Pedigree, and the dry light food looks a lot like Pedigree light...
Above all, do not feed table scraps. They can really mess up your pet's GI tract (especially cats), and bones can cause internal injury. However, there IS a difference between giving table scraps and making homemade food for your pets. The latter can be just as good, if not better, for your pet as commercial dogfood.
And finally as a side note...my cat will only eat Purina Cat Chow Indoor Formula. He will not touch anything else, not even canned food (strange cat!)

I do not look at the price because it usually has little to do with what is in it. You want to look at the ingredients. The main thing is you should not get food with Chicken by products in it that is usually a good sign that it is not good. I use ZD ultra for my dog with food allergies but it is very expensive and would not recommend it for a normal healthy dog. But for my other dog I use Nutro Max and it is good and I think I pay like $30 for a 40 ilb bag.

I have multiple show dogs, so economics has to play a factor, but nutrition is paramount. A good show dog starts from the inside out, so cheapest is definately not the answer for me. I have several favorites, but Iams would have to be the best food dog food for my crew. Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul is a great food too. Purina Pro Plan is great, but I had to travel about 50 miles to find a store that carries it, so I had to switch to something more convenient. I have also fed Exclusive, which has glucosamine in the food. All are good choices, and fairly economical.

puppy chow for puppies .you look at the ingrediants. you want a good food that does not have a lot of fillers and dyes which can cause allergies and upset stomaches which can than get u running to the vets so what have u saved? nothing so buy a good food and never change it suddenly do it gradual and you will than save on vet bills and have a healther dog. with a good brand that costs more they do not eat as much because they are getting full and getting the amount of protien they need instead of a bunch of fillers ythat keeps them hungry Kibbles and bits and chunks are full of dyes and fillers. read the ingrediants and u will know

Well, my dog was really picky as a puppy so i eventually found Nutro Ultra for puppies, which she loves. She's now turning a year old so I bought her Nutro Natural Choice - small bites (she's a small dog). I like the fact that she'll eat it but above that it is really healthy. It's not that expensive, I just bought a five pound bag for about ten dollars.

We feed Nutram. Human grade chicken, no filler, small firm stools, shiny coat, no skin problems, bright eyes and great teeth, no body odor either. Best of all? Our dogs don't fart on this food. Why? because it's highly digestible and low residue. We buy a 40 lb bag for about $45.00 Canadian.
